This Wednesday at 6pm on the WHS stage the Drama Team presents our first ever Westbrook Playwright's Festival! Come see scripts written, directed, acted and designed by Westbrook High School students. Comedy, drama, social justice and twisted mythology will be presented! Come see shows written by Natalie Morton, Ana Libby and Iris Stenbak! Donations will be accepted, but this is a free event! Come support a great group of talented WHS students!

More WHS Music Program Dominance!!!

Once again, the WHS Winter Guard finished on top! This time it was at the NESBA Championship. That's right, the WHS team was the best in New England!!! Congratulations to all of the coaches and students who make up this amazing group. They have put in an incredible amount of time and energy, and the results speak for themselves. The work ethic and dedication of this group is off the charts. As the winter sports season came to a close, there was very little activity around the building in the after school hours. There is a window of time between the end of winter sports and the beginning of spring sports, during which the building really empties out after the school day. It is in that stretch that the commitment level of the Winter Guard, both students and adults, is on full display. When they are the only show in town, you can fully appreciate truly how much work it takes to bring their show to such a high level of excellence. Just head down to the gym on an afternoon in March, and you will see the magic happening. It is intense! And there is also no secret why they are so good when it comes to performing at the competitions.

This New England title is just the most recent in a string of incredible accomplishments for our legendary WHS Music Program, which encompasses marching band, the jazz bands and choirs, chorus, color guard, and winter guard. They all fill this school and community with great pride. What a program!

The Annual WHS Staff vs. Seniors Basketball Game is next week! Come out for all the fun and festivities next Tuesday, April 14th. All proceeds benefit Project Grad.

The staff team is loaded with talent! ...talented teachers who are marginally athletic and probably highly prone to injury. It will be a blast!

Winter Guard Strikes Gold!

Congratulations to the 21 students of the Westbrook High School Winter guard for their gold medal performance at finals over the weekend! They received five stars in all categories! That is an amazing (and for most programs, unheard of) accomplishment. The Westbrook High School music and band program, and all of its subsidiaries, continues to make us all incredibly proud and represent this city and school community in the most amazing ways.

They also received first place at their New England show on Saturday! The New England finals are this coming Saturday!

READ ACROSS AMERICA

WHS is sharing the loveā€¦ specifically the love of reading. The amazing high school teachers, Sam Johnson, Nancy Ryan, and Drew Boursaw, organized groups of our students to head over to each elementary school and read to the younger kids. These reading rock stars are not only reading to their little buddies in English, but they are also able to read in the younger studentsā€™ native languages, whether Portuguese, Arabic, French, or otherwise. Kids love being read to, but wow! Kids REALLY love being read to by bigger kids. It has been amazing! A huge shoutout to our WHS teachers, as well as elementary principals Marc Bisson, Alexis Jones, and Vickie Hebert, and transportation director Melissa Foye for bringing this incredible endeavor to fruition. Super wicked awesome programs like our chapter of Read Across America take lots of time and hard work behind the scenes before a single picture book is ever opened up, and we are so thankful for the dedication of these talented adults. RAA builds literacy across the district by showing younger students the value of, and inspiring a love of reading.

Congratulations to Charlotte Caron, who has been recognized as this year's Maine Art Education Association New to the Profession Art Educator of the Year. This is a prestigious statewide award given annually to a stellar art teacher at the high school level. As a third year teacher, Charlotte has brought an incredibly well honed skill set to WHS. Our students are extremely lucky to have access to such an amazing educator.

Specializing in 3D and sculpture, Charlotte inspires students to create dynamic work through creative projects, while teaching the fundamentals of art and design. Charlotte also has a strong connection to area artists, museums, and even MECA, which has benefited our students tremendously, as they have participated in trips to galleries and college programs, as well as visits from practicing artists.

The MAEA President had this to say about Charlotte's contributions...

Your commitment and dedication to the continued advancement of art education at Westbrook High School, just within your first three years of teaching, is to be commended and we are happy that we can celebrate this with you, your community, and the state.
