Information that is important to know and understand as a parent when attending IEP meetings for your child.

All special education services that your child requires to receive a free and appropriate public education MUST be listed on the service page of the IEP. The IEP serves as a legally binding contract outlining specific services and supports that a child with a disability requires.

If your district is writing a general statement indicating that the services will be available to your child, without adding the services to the service grid, the district is not required to provide said services.

Please view your child's service pages to assure that all services are listed with frequency, duration, location and responsible staff.

This is true for services such as social work and BCBA consultation.

Changes in Special Education

Connecticut has revised the eligibility age for the use of "Developmental Delay" classification.

Connecticut has now extended the use of "Developmental Delay" classification from age five to age eight.

Previously this Connecticut statute limited the use of this classification to children through five. The restriction has posed challenges, particularly in preschool settings where the transition to kindergarten often leaves educators without a developmentally appropriate classification for students who clearly need continued support.

This is a positive legislative change, that I thought everyone should be aware of moving forward.
