For firefighters, the danger does not always end when the fire is extinguished.
According to the IAFF, 247 of the 311 IAFF members honored at the IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter
Memorial in September 2025 died of occupational cancer. Exposure must be treated as a central firefighter health issue.

Twenty-five years after September 11, we honor the firefighters and first responders who answered the call, and recognize the lasting health consequences many continue to face. Cancer remains one of the greatest health threats facing firefighters. FCSN is bringing together experts in medicine, research and the fire service to advance firefighter-specific cancer screening recommendations and help improve opportunities for earlier detection. This anniversary is a moment to remember their sacrifice, and act on what we have learned to better protect today's firefighters and generations to come.

Ray had noticed a change in his health but wasnโ€™t sure it was worth acting on, so he didn't. But after attending our session, he went back to his desk and called his doctor.

Within days, bloodwork identified a health issue that needed treatment, and Ray was able to get the care he needed.

Jeremy is running the 2026 ASICS Falmouth Road Race to help more people recognize the signs of cancer earlier, take action sooner, and improve their chances of better health outcomes.

His inspiration comes from his mother, who is completing her breast cancer treatments and on the road to cancer-free.

Jeremy believes education saves lives. Through DetecTogether's programs, more people can learn how to recognize potential warning signs, speak up sooner, and take action before cancer advances.

After graduating college, Katie discovered purpose through running. This year, she's combining that passion with a cause that matters deeply to her.

Katie was inspired by DetecTogether's mission to empower people to recognize early symptoms, advocate for their health, and take action sooner.

Her grandfather passed away from lung cancer in 2016, and her grandmother lost her battle with lymphoma.

She is running to help bring lifesaving education to more people and families.
