I saw an interesting segment on the Today show this morning on the rise of IEC's (Individual Education Consultants). Parents are spending thousands of dollars on these consulting services to help their kids get into the colleges of their choice (with no guarantees of course). They focus on tutoring, SAT prep, application assistance, and essay writing...all of which are great services for sure. However, none of these IEC's look to discover, and in turn leverage, a young adult's innate interests and natural strengths?

Self-awareness: Having the confidence to know who you are, the language to articulate what makes your great, and understanding all the educational and career paths that align with who you are is a much more impactful "leg up" you can give your young adults...and it costs thousands less than most IEC's.

I recently read a wonderful study from the Harvard Graduate School of Education/Making Caring Common Project. In its executive summary they report "a whopping 36% of young adults...reported anxiety...and 29% of young adults reported depression." They found that "half of young people in our survey reported that their mental health was negatively influenced by "not knowing what to do with their life." You can find the full study here:

Dear friends: How can our children be expected to know what they want to do by the time they head off to college? If you're not sure you WANT to spend tons of money sending your child to college without direction, I HIGHLY recommend College Career Compass. I get no money for this. They are not friends of mine. I recently read an article on what young adults can do to stand out to Admissions Teams; One of those things is "writing essays that amplify their unique strengths." While this is certainly true, it is easier said than done. I was left asking myself; Do most young adults know what their strengths are, and do they have the language to articulate that effectively?
Knowing yourself, your innate interests, motivations, values, and unique strengths is critical to writing impactful college essays.
