PGO - Professional Geoscientists Ontario

PGO - Professional Geoscientists Ontario PGO’s mission is to protect the public by regulating geoscience in Ontario and advancing professional practice.

PGO is the leader of the geosciences profession for the benefit of society and our registrants. The Act defines a professional geoscientist as someone who performs any activity that requires the knowledge, understanding and application of the principles of geoscience, and that concerns the safeguarding of the welfare of the public, life, health or property, including the natural environment, and who meets the requirements of membership in the PGO. Applications for registration as a professional geoscientist with PGO are available either online or can be downloaded from this website, OR by contacting the office.

September 16 is International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, also known as World Ozone Day.

It was on September 16, 1987 that the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was signed. According to the European Commission's Atmosphere Monitoring Service, "the Montreal Protocol and its amendments have had huge success in cutting as much as 98 percent of the world’s consumption of... ozone-depleting chemicals. As a result of the Protocol, the first universally ratified treaty in United Nations history, the ozone layer is slowly recovering and the hole has stopped growing."

The Montreal Protocol is not a landmark environmental agreement helping to preserve and heal our one and only ozone layer, it is an example of what can be done when commitment meets action.

Join Trina Maher, president of Bridging Concepts and a PGO Councillor, for this free session held on Tuesday, October 6, where Trina will share workplace health and safety topics through an Indigenous worldview.

Indigenous nations have been practicing health and safety since time immemorial. Their communities and cultures have depended on these practices for survival and resilience over generations. In some Indigenous teachings, the well-being of an individual is gauged through the four aspects of a medicine wheel: mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual. Trina will illustrate how these aspects manifest in workplace spaces, providing insights on ways to support Indigenous workers using practical and culturally relevant approaches.

This session is eligible for 1 CPD hour in the Education category. Register here: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/gku7yj5/lp/1e24a2b6-f568-4e26-8b27-3bc00c9f35c1

As you enjoy this long weekend, thank a miner! Resource workers are foundational to the story of Labour Day in Canada. Their efforts helped establish many of the safety standards, workplace protections, and rights that Canadians often take for granted today. PGO takes this opportunity to recognize not only past generations of miners, but also the exploration crews, geological field staff, engineers, and resource professionals who are all part of the ongoing story of workplace safety and accountability. As a regulator, PGO is proud to guide and reinforce decisions that protect workers, communities, and the public interest.

We also share the reminder that our office will be closed on Monday, September 7.

Geoscientists Canada / Géoscientifiques Canada (GC), the national organization for geoscience regulators, offers a valuable Publications & Policy resource page for current and aspiring P.Geo.s. The site includes key documents on professional ethics, registration requirements, licensing, and other regulatory topics that help shape and inform geoscience practice across Canada.

The page’s standout feature is the Geoscience Practice Guidelines Catalogue, a searchable database of practice guidelines from geoscience regulators and professional organizations across Canada. Whether you're looking for guidance on field practices, consulting, reporting, or expert witness work, the catalogue makes it easy to find trusted, reliable resources.

PGO's Virtual Mentoring platform answers common questions about mentoring: Where do I look for a mentor/mentee? How do we meet? How do I know they want to connect with me?

PGO's Virtual Mentoring program provides a platform to match mentors and mentees based on a few important details. Participants then have the option to confirm connections and select the meeting option that works best, whether that is in the platform or in another place that suits.
