In every sector, you'll find Loran alumni working to create a stronger future for their communities, Canada, and the world. Here's how Loran alumni have been making a difference in their industries recently.

With experiential learning at its core, Loran Summers allows scholars to gain real-world experience, expand their professional networks, and practice navigating the job search process long before graduation. Currently, 71 scholars are lending their talents to a variety of organizations and companies across 12 provinces and territories in Canada and six other countries spanning three continents.

2023 Heaslip Loran Scholar Mariana Cueto Mendoza, 2022 Loran Scholar Luka Bordeleau, and 2023 R. Howard Webster Loran Scholar Tumi Fabiyi shared their reflections from last summer. Though they worked in different sectors and regions, they each left feeling confident about their unique paths and capable of leveraging tools to make meaningful change. Le programme des stages d’été Loran, articulé sur l’apprentissage par l’expérience, donne aux boursier·ère·s la chance d’acquérir une expérience concrète, d’élargir leur réseau professionnel et de s’entraîner à la recherche d’emploi bien avant la fin de leurs études. À l’heure actuelle, 71 de ces jeunes prêtent leurs compétences à un éventail d’organisations et d’entreprises dans 12 provinces et territoires au Canada, ainsi que dans 6 pays sur 3 continents différents.

Mariana Cueto Mendoza, Boursière Loran Heaslip 2023, Luka Bordeleau, Boursier Loran 2022 et Tumi Fabiyi, Boursière Loran R. Howard Webster 2023, nous ont fait part de leurs réflexions au sujet de leur stage de l’été dernier. Ayant œuvré dans différents secteurs et différentes régions, les trois en ont tiré une même confiance quant à leur parcours personnel et à leur capacité à mettre à profit des outils pour apporter des changements concrets. Though their work spans a multitude of sectors and disciplines, Loran alumni continue to be guided by Loran’s core values of character,
service, and leadership. Wherever their paths lead them, Loran Scholars are united by a lifelong commitment to leaving things better than they found them.

David-Martin Milot ('07) is a physician specializing in public health and preventive medicine. Having worked as a medical consultant specializing in public health and preventive medicine at the Public Health Department of the CISSS Montérégie-Centre, he has been its director since September 2025. He is also co-scientific director of the Interdisciplinary Centre for International Health Development and has been president of Doctors of the World Canada since 2020. An active citizen, he is involved in various projects related to the health of marginalized and vulnerable populations, both in Quebec and around the world.

Together, Loran alumni like David are devising creative solutions to complex problems and contributing to meaningful change.

Bien que leur travail couvre une multitude de secteurs et de disciplines, les ancien·ne·s Boursier·ère·s Loran continuent de respecter les valeurs fondamentales de Loran : caractère, engagement et leadership. Malgré leurs parcours variés, les Boursier·ère·s Loran sont uni·e·s par un même engagement à vie, celui de laisser les choses en meilleur état qu’actuellement.

David-Martin Milot (2007) est médecin spécialiste en santé publique et en médecine préventive. Après avoir occupé le poste d’expert-conseil médical en santé publique et médecine préventive au sein du service de santé publique du CISSS Montérégie-Centre, il en est le directeur depuis septembre 2025. Il est également codirecteur scientifique du Centre interdisciplinaire de développement international en santé et préside Médecins du Monde Canada depuis 2020. Citoyen engagé, il participe à divers projets liés à la santé des populations marginalisées et vulnérables, tant au Québec qu’ailleurs dans le monde.

À l’instar de David, les ancien·ne·s Boursier·ère·s Loran mettent leur créativité à l’œuvre et en commun pour trouver des solutions à des problèmes complexes et contribuer à susciter des changements concrets.

Qu’il s’agisse de la complicité qui s’est nouée entre les finalistes lors du trajet en taxi entre l’aéroport et les sélections nationales, de la création d’une entreprise de logiciels de commerce électronique pendant leurs études de premier cycle en tant que Boursiers Loran dans deux universités différentes ou encore de leur réussite en tant qu’entrepreneurs contribuant à bâtir une entreprise technologique d’envergure mondiale, le parcours de Dhruv et d’Armon reflète le potentiel qui s’était déjà manifesté chez eux lorsqu’ils étaient Boursiers Loran.

Chez Loran, nous parlons souvent de « l’effet d’entraînement à long terme » que peut avoir l’investissement dans des jeunes exceptionnel·le·s. L’histoire de Dhruv et d’Armon en est un excellent exemple. Nous sommes ravis d’annoncer que Dhruv Patel (2018) et Armon Shokravi (2018), deux anciens Boursiers Loran, se sont engagés à soutenir le parcours d’un·e Boursier·ère Loran Shokravi Patel de la cohorte 2026, ce qui fait d’eux les plus jeunes anciens boursiers à financer une Bourse Loran.

From a bond formed between finalists on the taxi ride from the airport to National Selections weekend, to building an e-commerce software business during their undergrads as Loran Scholars at two different universities, to becoming successful entrepreneurs helping to build a global technology company, Dhruv and Armon’s journey reflects the promise first seen in them as Loran Scholars.

At Loran, we often speak about the “long-term ripple effect” of investing in exceptional young people. Today, that ripple has become a wave. We are thrilled to share that Loran alumni Dhruv Patel (’18) and Armon Shokravi (’18) have committed to supporting the journey of a 2026 Shokravi Patel Loran Scholar – the youngest alumni to ever underwrite a Loran Scholar.

Mentorship is a key part of Loran's program, providing scholars with real-world connections and more. When we select mentors, we don't just look for impressive titles; we look for leaders in their workplace and community who can impart guidance and advice rooted in integrity. It's a relationship based on growth and reciprocity.

Here's what Anissa Hilborn, who has volunteered as a Loran mentor since 2024, has to say about her experience: "Mentoring allows you to step outside your day-to-day routine and see the world through a fresh perspective. It challenges you to be a better listener, a more thoughtful advisor, and a more intentional leader. And honestly, it’s just fun. These scholars bring so much energy and curiosity to every conversation. More than anything, you walk away feeling like you’re part of something bigger. When you mentor with Loran, you’re contributing to a ripple effect of change that touches communities far and wide. And that feels incredible.
