Becoming an acupuncturist or traditional Chinese medicine practitioner will cost you between $23000 - $43000 in tuition, depending on your program and school.

💰Financial aid, bursaries and scholarships may be available to you if needed.

☯️If you plan to enrol in a diploma TCM/Acupuncture program accepted by the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario you may be eligible for loans, grants or awards granted under the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP)

📌OSAP - If your chosen acupuncture school is eligible, you can apply for Ontario Student Assistant Program. You will have to take a full course load and are registered for full-time studies for the duration of your program.

📌Scholarships and Bursaries - Some acupuncture schools offer scholarships and bursaries to their students. The requirements vary with each school. Contact them to find out.

Many of the acupuncture schools will be happy to help you answer questions about financing your education and help you get started in your new and exciting TCM career.

❓What is the Best Acupuncture School?

You want to know if a particular acupuncture program is a good fit for you, there is a lot to consider as each Acupuncture school is unique.

First, ensure that the acupuncture school provides you with the tools to pass the Pan-Canadian examinations and become a registered member of the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario (CTCMPAO).

Research the acupuncture school and speak to as many different schools and graduates as possible.
Visit the Acupuncture Schools - Many are holding virtual tours. There you can get to know:
📌opinions – by contacting a current student or their alumnus
📌school’s professional affiliations – indicates that there is an interest to keep abreast of the latest knowledge and practices.
📌graduate’s job placement rate – high job placement rate indicates the quality and strength of the curriculum and preparing their students for success in their career
📌graduate rate – a measure of the percent of students who started and completed a program on time. This will give you insight into how many students have finished the program. It is a metric that holds a school accountable, measures the quality of the school.
📌Pan-Canadian Exam Passing Rate – a high passing rate indicates the school’s ability to prepare students with the knowledge and clinical experience as set out by the CTCMPAO

☯️What is an Acupuncturist?
Acupuncturists and Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners (TCMP's) are skilled health care professionals who apply the theories of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. They care for patients by evaluating and treating pain and illness and in maintaining health and wellness.

In this career field, you will gain expertise in using both TCM and western methods. You will learn to treat in various age groups from infants to the elderly. Within the framework of TCM you will also be able to treat a wide range of health conditions such as pediatrics, gynecology, addictions, sports injury, pain management, mental health, oncology and dermatology.

📌If you are a good listener and observer, have a caring nature & excellent interpersonal skills, and can remain composed in any practice situation, this may be the career choice for you.

Acupuncturists and TCMP's work in private clinics and within the public and private health care systems such as hospitals, fertility clinics, cancer treatment centres, addictions centres, physiotherapy centres, health and wellness and spa environments.

Acupuncturists are regulated under The Health Professions Act 2010 and the Acupuncturist Regulations in Ontario.

3 Considerations to Becoming An Acupuncturist

❓Are you thinking about becoming an acupuncturist?
Do you wonder about the career path of an acupuncturist?

Acupuncture is growing in popularity and is a Regulated Healthcare profession in many provinces in Canada, including Ontario. Acupuncture is a safe, effective, and affordable form of treatment covered by many healthcare insurance plans.

Before you decide to change your career and become an acupuncturist there are a few things you should take into consideration. Only by considering the following issues will you be able to decide whether or not a career as an acupuncturist is for you.

1️⃣Working Hours
An acupuncture career can allow you to set your own schedule. Choose the hours during the day that you would like to work and which days of the week suit you.

If work/life balance is important to you then this is a career to consider.

2️⃣Acupuncture Program Admissions
Most schools in Ontario will insist that students have completed a two-year post-secondary education or equivalent professional experience.
If you have equivalent or professional experience, you may be exempt from some classes.

The programs can be up to 3 years as an acupuncturist or 4 years as a traditional Chinese medical practitioner. Keep that timeline in mind when considering the time it takes to start your new career.

3️⃣Diversify your Career
You can take your career in many directions and learn and use different modalities.
As an acupuncturist, you may want to start to treat clients using Chinese Herbs. Or you may want to attend massage school and become a Registered Massage Therapist.

You will have the potential to treat your clients in a variety of ways to address their health concerns.

❓ Question? Do I need to be proficient in English to attend a TCM program in Ontario?
Answer: Yes!

📌English proficiency is required as the TCM classes in Ontario are held in English. If your post-secondary education is not in English, you will need to provide proof of English proficiency.

📌To prove English proficiency you may be required to submit a Test of English a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam, receive a passing grade, and demonstrate satisfactory written/oral comprehension of English.

📌English fluency is essential for your acupuncture program so you can understand your instructors, clinic clients as well as the written material. In addition, all your written and oral assignments will be in English.

Regulation of health care professionals is essential. A clear and defined framework within is imperative to maintain the competence needed to provide health services that are safe, effective and patient-centred.

If you are thinking about a career as Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture practitioner, know that your clients will feel safer knowing that your profession is regulated.

📌The Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA), and associated health profession Acts, set out the governing framework for the regulated health professions in Ontario.

What do you learn in an acupuncture school?

If you are considering becoming an acupuncturist this is a valid question.

In your first year, you will build your TCM foundation and Western biomedical concepts and slowly begin to integrate them into practice.

☯️Introduction to Acupuncture Points is one of the first foundational courses you take.

Learn to locate acupoints along the meridians of the body.
Learn the commonly used methods of locating the points using anatomical landmarks, proportional measurements, and finger and thumb measurements (cun).

Discover the differential functions and clinical significance of each point and compare other points on the same or different meridians.
