As we approach a new school year, we're celebrating the importance of kindness, belonging, and community.
All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold reminds children that every person brings something valuable to the classroom. It's a wonderful conversation starter about friendship, inclusion, and creating a welcoming environment where everyone feels respected and valued.
💬 What books are your family reading as you prepare for the new school year?
Montessori Children's House

This month, we're featuring the Montessori Knobbed Cylinders.
By carefully removing and replacing each cylinder, children refine visual discrimination, concentration, and fine motor control. This sensorial material helps children recognize differences in size and dimension while preparing them for future mathematical concepts.

✨ Summer Discovery: Fireflies
Few things capture the magic of summer quite like fireflies.
Observing these fascinating insects encourages children to slow down, ask questions, and connect with the natural world. Simple moments of wonder often spark the most meaningful learning.

For more than 50 years, Montessori Children's House has been helping children in the Des Moines community grow in independence, confidence, and a love of learning.
Our classrooms are carefully prepared to support each child's unique development through hands-on materials, meaningful work, and opportunities for exploration. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, children are encouraged to learn at their own pace while building responsibility, concentration, and respect for others.
For decades, Montessori Children's House has provided an environment where children are empowered to become capable, curious, and lifelong learners. ✨
Freeze flowers, berries, or small toys in water and invite your child to carefully "excavate" them using warm water, droppers, or small tools.
This simple activity encourages observation, problem-solving, and sensory exploration while introducing basic scientific concepts.
The Montessori environment is carefully prepared to support independence, concentration, and exploration.
Every material has a purpose, every shelf has intention, and every space is designed to help children learn through hands-on discovery.
A thoughtfully prepared environment allows children to grow with confidence and curiosity.
Summer brings new adventures and new books to explore. ☀️
Our summer book rotation features stories that encourage curiosity, imagination, and a connection to the natural world. Reading together helps build language, comprehension, and a lifelong love of learning.

Combine art and science with a simple watercolor flower study.
Invite your child to observe a real flower and paint what they see using watercolors. As they work, encourage them to notice details such as the petals, stem, leaves, and center of the flower. Once the painting is dry, older children can label the different parts of the flower.
This activity encourages careful observation, builds scientific vocabulary, and helps children connect art with the natural world.

Making ice cream is a fun way to combine practical life skills with scientific discovery.
As children measure ingredients, pour, mix, and observe changes in texture, they develop sequencing skills, coordination, and curiosity about how things work.
Learning is often sweetest when it's hands-on.
💬 What’s your favorite ice cream combo?
