Westridge Elementary (WDMCS)

Westridge Elementary (WDMCS) Westridge Elementary is one of eight elementary schools in the West Des Moines Community Schools.

The WDMCSD serves more than 55,000 residents in the western portion of Polk County — West Des Moines and Clive, parts of Urbandale and Windsor Heights, and nearby rural areas. Covering 36.6 square miles, the district has grown around a former railroad center, Valley Junction, and the farmland north and south of the Raccoon River. This booming suburban area directly borders Des Moines, the capitol city of Iowa, and is within a short drive to a variety of arts, entertainment, sporting and shopping venues. Nationally recognized for excellence, the district is the ninth largest in the state.

Westridge students and staff want to say a very special Happy Birthday to our princiPAL Jody Kerchal! Students created cards and posters, sang happy birthday during the morning announcements and showered Mrs. Kerchal with high fives, hugs, and special birthday wishes all day! 🪱🔬 SCIENCE IS GETTING A LITTLE GROSS AT WESTRIDGE! 🐛

West Des Moines Community Schools has adopted a new science curriculum, and our 5th grade team is already getting their hands dirty!

Our 5th grade teachers, Rachel, Melissa, and Genna,(not pictured Trina) along with Aftin (Resource) and Megan (Instructional Coach) recently rolled up their sleeves and created a nurse log/terrariums for their students to explore in the coming week.

And let's just say… the reactions have already been priceless! 😂 Some were definitely grossed out, while others were ALL IN and couldn't get enough! That's what we love about hands-on science—students aren't just learning about something. They are observing, wondering, questioning, exploring, and getting a little messy along the way!

We can't wait to see what our scientists discover! 🐛🪱🔎

We kicked off our day with a little Candy Pong, showed off our favorite team gear, and enjoyed a tailgate-style lunch together in the teachers’ lounge!

There may be a little Cy-Hawk rivalry in the air, but one thing we can all agree on… Westridge staff knows how to have fun! 😂

We had so much fun celebrating together and showing a little team spirit! 🏈🎉

🎻 Making Music in 4th Grade!

Our 4th graders recently had the opportunity to meet some of our amazing WDM Orchestra teachers and learn all about the instruments they will soon have the chance to play! Even better, they got to try an instrument themselves! 🎶

Our 4th graders will be getting started with orchestra very soon, and we can't wait to hear the beautiful sounds they create. What a fun opportunity to explore something new, discover a talent, and find their own way to make music at Westridge! 🧡
