WE HELP OUR STUDENTS ATTAIN THEIR ACADEMIC GOALS. We customize instructions recognizing individual student’s strengths and weaknesses. In group instructions, this often means a smaller class size made up of students of comparable academic ability. A student should not be struggling to keep pace with a fast paced class, nor a student should be bored by the sluggish pace of a class. We are 100% comm

itted to the success of the student. Our engagement with students doesn't end when the lesson time is up. We expect and enthusiastically welcome our students to contact the instructor outside the class to seek help. Only a student who is reviewing and practicing materials outside the class would realize gaps in his/her understanding and would seek help. This is the type of students we covet. We offer to teach concepts and learning strategies using many examples, and, in return, expect the student do the assigned homework with a focus, rigor and timeliness. That is how concepts are reinforced and internalized. Test performance of our students is directly correlated with the amount of effort they have been willing to put in.

A SWEET TEST-TAKING STRATEGY

Thinking about my students taking various AP exams in this and next week, I came across this article on virtues of putting a chocolate in the mouth before stepping in your exam hall.

http://canada1.national.edu/why-eating-chocolate-while-you-study-is-good-for-you/ #

It has listed numerous benefits of dark chocolates in enhancing the brain functions temporarily. A chocolate (if one likes it.. who doesn’t?) can put one in a positive happy mood. I definitely believe a cheerful mind is helpful in suppressing over-acting nerves. So I’d suggest try that in addition to everything else that you’ve been doing to optimize your mind and body for important exams. Studying well and practicing rigorously are still the best strategies for taking any test as they increase the test-taker’s confidence. A high confidence is an enormous psychological help in keeping the anxiety level low and improving the focus.

If studying well for your school classes is your goal, I invite you to consider my summer group classes in physics, chemistry and math in the summer of 2023. I am super encouraged by the interest of parents and students. 10+ years of tutoring experience to enable my students reach higher level of performance.

Preparing for College Applications

Recently I recorded a Zoom video for the benefit of my high school students and (maybe more so) for their parents, outlining the key factors for a marketable college application, especially for selective colleges. A lot of emphasis in this presentation is on college essays which is the need of the moment for my high school senior students. I believe this could be beneficial to parents of freshmen, sophomore and juniors also, as it may provide them some ideas to guide their kids to position for success through the high school years. I received a very positive feedback from many of my students and parents; so I am encouraged to make it available for others as well if they are so inclined. Please feel free to contact me at (609) 915-8398.

My school year physics-chemistry-math tutoring schedule is applicable from Monday, Sept. 12. Coming off from a very good experience with summer group classes, I am looking forward to the new school year. I still have a small number of open time slots, so inquiries are welcome. (609) 915-8398.

CONSIDER THIS TO INTRODUCE SCIENCE TO YOUR CHILD

One of my high school students recently won a science competition and would be representing NJ in a national meeting. Her task was to identify and research a condition that some people suffer from; devise and propose a product or a service solution; and present the solution at a conference. While getting the recognition for her work was amazing, she benefitted so much simply by participation in this competition even if it had not resulted in an award. She learned the research topic at a considerable depth, followed the creative process to come up with a solution, and confirmed the solution’s suitability well enough to present and defend it in a meeting with experts. She practiced presentation skills, and she has an opportunity to network with influential adults in this field of science.

I would encourage parents of middle school children who are looking to introduce science to their kids at a younger age (I receive so many inquiries) to seek out STEM competitions. Many competitions are for high school kids, but 7th and 8th graders may pick one of those competition prompts and begin working with the help of parents or a mentor. Learning is much easier when there’s a goal (kids study in high school to achieve the goal of a good grade) and the promise of a reward. As kids become proficient in the science of their choice, they would excel when they eventually learn in a structured form in high school, and hopefully differentiate themselves as they grow through high school and post high school.

Talking about science, I am excited by the interest of parents and students for my summer group classes in high school math, chemistry and physics. Please feel free to text or call me at (609) 915-8398 to discuss if you’d like to know more.

ABOUT YOUR TEENAGE STUDENT

This week is light for me as most summer students are taking a breather before the school reopens. So I have an opportunity to do something that I have hoped to do for a long time – that is to chat with parents individually to discuss their children. I had many questions while my children were growing up through pre-teenage and teenage – time when the pre-frontal cortex is not mature enough and limbic system controls the behavior. In other words, emotions run high, impulsivity is high, and deliberation and control allowed by the “thoughtful” part of the brain is less (some lucky kids are exceptions to the rule.. my children were not).

In those years and since then, I read a lot, listened a lot and learned much about the science of mind, observing my children as well as my many students over the years. The idea behind the individual meetings is to discuss questions or concerns parents might have – about kids’ behavior, their focus or lack of it, habits (or even addictions) that could be distracting from being productive, their aspirations and interests that may seem odd to parents, how parents could help to make their school years more meaningful and position for a longer term success, and, of course, the more immediate concern for most parents of high school students - how to best position for college entry.

If this is of any value, you are welcome to schedule a time this week by contacting me at (609)915-8398.

GREAT PEOPLE HAVE GREAT MENTORS

I would like to share this article that I recently came across.
https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/optimizing-success/202009/how-create-your-own-mentoring-team

Why is this useful? Peek into the background of any high achiever – from a math Olympiad winner to a chess grandmaster, a student council president to a CEO, an expert debater to a senator, MVP of the sports team to an Olympic gold medalist – and you will always always see that the person benefitted from the guidance of one or more mentors in their formative years and during the pursuit of their goals. People who are mentored outperform, outearn and generally live a higher quality of life than those who are not.

The article talks about a “team of mentors.” Why a team of mentors? Because there’s no one perfect mentor just as there’s no one perfect mentee. It’s unrealistic that one mentor’s experiences match perfectly with mentee’s all needs, so it makes sense to draw from experiences and guidance of more than one.

Now we are convinced that being mentored could be useful, how do we find a great mentor? Here are ten not-so-easy steps.

Few time slots open in my 2021-22 tutoring schedule, so I am welcoming inquiries for tutoring in physics, chemistry and math at honors and AP level. Call/text at (609) 915-8398.

2020-21 has been another year of high academic accomplishment by my students with all six high school seniors heading to highly selective colleges – including three to ivy league institutions. Of the 23 AP results I know so far, there are 21 fives and 2 fours. Inspiring effort by students during a very challenging year. Very proud.

ROBOTICS WORKSHOP

One of my bright students - a rising freshman in WWP - is offering a robotics workshop (with some assistance from his dad). Details are in the accompanying flyer. Sounds like a fun summer activity, while also exploring/expanding a skill set.

This is a wonderful example of what kids could do during their school breaks to pursue their passions, derive experience in organizing, marketing, etc while also benefiting other kids.
Students aspiring to go to elite colleges need to demonstrate their character - cognition, work ethic, community sense, etc. in addition to strong grades and SAT/ACT scores. Organizing events like workshops, charity fundraisers (a couple of years ago one of my students and his friends organized a 5K race to raise money for some charitable cause), community service projects that require one’s organization skills is a great way to accomplish that. Serving meaningful internship is another good experience, but if you are unable to line up a good internship, then one could work proactively using one's skill and interest to produce his/her own extracurricular experience like this student has been doing. Experiences involved in such activities provide nice material to write about in college essays also.

FOR STUDENTS ASPIRING FOR HIGHLY SELECTIVE COLLEGES AND THEIR PARENTS..

One way is to “buy” the seat (a price tag of $50 million at a super elite university), but for those of us with less than unlimited means, a student’s abilities must stand out in a densely crowded field of thousands of applicants with excellent GPAs and excellent (even perfect) SAT/ACT scores. One channel available to differentiate oneself is to participate and win in competitions that have a statewide, national and international scope. I have given here a link to various STEM competitions available to students with STEM inclination.

https://www.idtech.com/blog/ultimate-guide-to-stem-competitions-events

Depending on their reputation, scope and quality and depth of participation, different competitions would weigh differently in a college admission administrator’s assessment. Giving a strong account of oneself in these competitions is obviously not easy. They require a preparation from an early age and a lot of mentoring, just as a champion tennis or chess player begins training as early as at 6. Regardless one wins a competition or not, a consistent preparation would make one very proficient in that particular skill and that can have a life-long beneficial effect. One risk that I may point out (and this is very real) is that a child may put in less effort toward school grades and standardized tests preparation. Grades and standardized test scores remain the first screen before colleges begin looking for differentiation, unless a kid is winning something as extreme as Regeneron Science Talent Search.

NO RUSH TO TAKE SAT/ACT

A strictly personal opinion about the best time to take a standardized test - You don’t need to be thinking about standardized tests in the freshman or sophomore year. There is absolutely no need to take the SAT or ACT, even as practice. You should aim to take them in your junior year, closer to the time you will apply to college - when you are older, have learned more math, have done more diverse reading in your language classes and outside and improved your reading and processing speed, and have developed more test taking savvy. Just leave enough time for a second attempt which could be as late as the August after the Junior year. For an intellectually active teenager, the expansion of mental abilities is very significant from year to year. So why not take advantage? College admission officers are more impressed by the high scores and pay no attention to the age at which the test is taken.
