Benefits to 4-H membership: • Borrow curricula from the 4-H Library in the Western Mass 4-H Office in Amherst • Belong to a group with other people who share similar interests • Participate in Visual Presentations and gain confidence while learning to speak in front of a group in a relaxed environment • Set goals for a project, complete the project and learn the basics of record keeping • Exhibit projects at fairs and win ribbons and prize money • Attend workshops, camps and national events • Receive information about youth education through 4-H and in Western Mass (e.g. Envirothon workshop at UMass, veterinary camp, robotics competitions, etc.) • Companies will not let the general public tour their facilities but 4-H clubs are often given access (e.g. iRobot, Hasbro, UMass labs, Lego, etc.) Contact Tom Waskiewicz for information on how to start a club or join an existing club. Have you tried hosting a virtual club meeting yet? Contact us if you need assistance staying connected with your members, leaders, families and friends. Be well!

The K-9 Wizards 4-H Club had their first virtual meeting just over a week ago where they reviewed organ systems of the dog and it was "crazy hat" meeting. At their next virtual meeting, they will be studying the Coursing Ability Test, Fast CAT, and hound group field trials.

What are you doing at your virtual 4-H club meetings? Share with us, so that we can post it. Descriptions and photos welcome.

Peep peep peep!

The Western MA 4-H Embryology Program is a success despite all the obstacles! Congratulations to the participating teachers in Berkshire, Hampshire, Hampden and Franklin County on your chick hatching. Good reports have been coming in.. Remote cameras, pictures and activities have been shared with their students. Teachers were into their second week of the hatch when they had to move their incubators from school to their homes. (This is not recommended since viability can be diminished by moving since the temp is not staying constant.) This proved us wrong since we had a good numbers hatch. One Springfield school reported they had 33 out of 36 eggs hatch. Below are some pictures shared by one of our teachers from Berkshire County. Thank you Margaret!

Massachusetts 4-H Program

All Massachusetts 4-H programs, activities, and club meetings are cancelled until further notice. This includes advisory councils, fair boards, horse advisories, and events. Groups are allowed to meet virtually, through Facetime, Google Hangouts, or other remote means, but not in person.

The University of Massachusetts and 4-H follow the guidance and policies as established by the University and public health officials when making decisions regarding gatherings and programming and are practicing the policy of social distancing that will help mitigate the spread of the virus. We hope that 4-H members, volunteers, and families stay healthy and help to create a safer environment for all.

[03/12/20]   Like many things near and dear to us, Regional Visual Presentations scheduled for Saturday at Hopkins Academy in Hatfield have been cancelled, due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Now, we may feel like our lives have been disrupted. But we challenge you to shift your thinking and do your part to make a brighter tomorrow!
In true 4H fashion, please take this time to be #trueleaders and #differencemakers in your communities by practicing social distancing if you are able. Take advantage of some much-needed down time to refuel your body and mind. Learn something new; take a virtual class you might not otherwise have taken...Maybe organize your favorite collection of memories....Bond with your animals...Build or make something...Connect with love ones. Whatever you choose to do safely, do it with progressive thinking and make every minute count, MAKE THE BEST BETTER.🍀🍀🍀🍀 Pioneer Valley 4-H #webleedgreen #hampdencounty4h #mass4h #makethebestbetter #inspirekidstodo #4hempowersYOUth

Winter Workshops are a wrap! Thank you to all the volunteers and presenters working in concert to make today’s educational event such an enriching life experience for so many. 🍀🍀🍀🍀#webleedgreen #makethebestbetter #inspirekidstodo #4hempowersYOUth #mass4h #hampdencounty4h

Thanks, Art, for the following photos.

I could spend 40 hours/week thanking all of our incredible 4-H volunteers and recognizing our outstanding 4-H youth. (Talk about a dream job!)

I hope to save ink and electronic data, hoping that "Thanks to all of you. Great job!" suffices for this week and covers not just the stupendous effort for Winter Workshops but all else. I know we ask a lot, a bunch and that it may seem never ending. But...but, when you have had a series of events like we've recently experienced-achievement programs, workshops, Record judging, conferences, trainings, and knowing that VPs, Ag Day, dinners, auctions, a calf sale, Window/Poster/Exhibit week, fair planning, a 5K run and more are right in front of us, it's, yes, challenging in a way, but it's also invigorating, exciting, a time to team-up and to do even more.

If you looked over the crowd at today's Winter Workshop, it's clear that we have a growing, diverse 4-H family in every way. Age-we have some senior folks who span decades of dedication to 4-H. We also have those who just received their 10-15 year volunteer pins. Oh, and 1st year club leaders took the opportunity to jump right into the program.

Re; youth, our seniors not only attended, but assisted with organization and workshops. Lots of 4-H'ers in that mid-range of 11-14 (we'll keep them enrolled) and, finally, a dynamic group of Cloverbuds, just soaking up every ounce of knowledge/experience they could. Geography-every county in western and central Mass was in attendance. Worcester, Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden and Hampshire counties were represented.

Project areas-of course, 4-H Horse Clubs were here. So were Robotics, Coding, STEM and Homesteading.

So, 4-H Family, take a bow, take a breather (enjoy the Super Bowl), 'cause we're "up and at 'em", Monday morning. Buckle your seatbelts, place your tray in the upright position and hold on.
