Calling all Horse Project Members!!!! Check it out!

[06/22/20]   A Message from the Interim Director, Linda Horn:

To Members of the Massachusetts 4-H Community:

We hope this message finds you and your families healthy and managing well during this challenging time. I know we are all looking forward to the day when we can once again gather in person to support, educate and celebrate Massachusetts youth.

As Massachusetts state rules related to current public health concerns begin to relax, many in our 4-H community are asking important questions about which youth events and activities can resume, when they can resume, and how? An important principle to keep in mind as we move forward is, that while all citizens are subject to our Governor’s guidance on reopening, 4-H as a unit of the statewide UMass Extension program is also subject to the guidance and rules of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, which in many cases will proceed more slowly and with greater caution.

This message serves as an official announcement that we are cancelling all in-person 4-H events and activities through the end of August, 2020. This includes animal classes, workshops, and 4-H sponsored fairs, as well as all 4-H club meetings. These can continue to meet virtually.

In May and June, 4-H volunteer leaders across the state proactively canceled all 4-H Fairs for this summer. Please note that 4-H participation is now also suspended through the end of August for other Massachusetts fairs where 4-H classes are conducted and where fair activities and operations may be planned or managed by 4-H staff, youth or volunteers. Additionally, any official 4-H presence at general agricultural fairs in Massachusetts, which could include staffing tables or running concessions, is prohibited. This includes a prohibition on displaying 4-H banners or other program symbols as well as distributing promotional materials. In place of the in-person 4-H fairs, the Massachusetts 4-H Program will hold a Virtual Statewide 4-H Fair on August 15. More details about this event, including registration and classes, will be available in an upcoming NewsBlast.

A decision on 4-H activities and events in September and beyond will be made and communicated by July 20th.

We recognize all too well that this will be difficult, but the health and safety of our youth, our volunteers, and our 4-H staff must continue to be our most important and central guiding concern. We will continue to keep you updated as Massachusetts state and university rules evolve.

Wishing you all the very best.

Peep peep peep!

The Western MA 4-H Embryology Program is a success despite all the obstacles! Congratulations to the participating teachers in Berkshire, Hampshire, Hampden and Franklin County on your chick hatching. Good reports have been coming in.. Remote cameras, pictures and activities have been shared with their students. Teachers were into their second week of the hatch when they had to move their incubators from school to their homes. (This is not recommended since viability can be diminished by moving since the temp is not staying constant.) This proved us wrong since we had a good numbers hatch. One Springfield school reported they had 33 out of 36 eggs hatch. Below are some pictures shared by one of our teachers from Berkshire County. Thank you Margaret!

Now, we may feel like our lives have been disrupted. But we challenge you to shift your thinking and do your part to make a brighter tomorrow!
In true 4H fashion, please take this time to be #trueleaders and #differencemakers in your communities by practicing social distancing if you are able. Take advantage of some much-needed down time to refuel your body and mind. Learn something new; take a virtual class you might not otherwise have taken...Maybe organize your favorite collection of memories....Bond with your animals...Build or make something...Connect with love ones.
