Discovery Preschool The Discovery Preschool offers an exceptional preschool program for children ages 3 to 5 years of age

Preschool marks the beginning of a life-long learning career for your child. The City of West Sacramento is proud to offer an exceptional preschool program for children 3 to 5 years of age (Tiny Tots for ages 3 and 4; Kinder Kids for ages 4 and 5). The Discovery Preschool promotes school readiness and education. Specifically, the program helps to grow a child's cognitive understanding of numbers,

shapes, colors, and the alphabet. Simultaneusly, the friendly learning environment provides a safe place for emotional, social, physical, and creative developement. Field trips, educational visitors, special projects, and fun opportunities are conducted throughout the year to facilitate a wide array of enjoyable learning experiences. Discovery Preschool participates in our county’s Quality Rating Improvement System and received a top rating for quality. We utilize research based, developmentally appropriate curriculum aligned to the California State Preschool Standards, a comprehensive social emotional curriculum, and our teachers have high levels of education in Early Childhood Development. Discovery Preschool is a school-year program, beginning in late August and finishing in early June. Families sign their children up for one month sessions beginning in August, with priority registration for participants who are currently enrolled in the program. Fees will vary according to the number of class meetings each session. Currently the program is run from 8:00-10:30 for the am class and 11:30-2:00 for the pm class.

Lamppost Pizza & UC Davis Fire Station 34 Field Trip 🍕 🔥

As we wrap up the month of November, we are thrilled to look back on one of our most popular field trips~our annual visit to Lamppost Pizza in Davis! And this year, we added something extra special: a tour of UC Davis Fire Station 34 on campus!

This month’s theme was bread. 🥖 We explored how bread is made from start to finish, and the children even baked their own bread in the classroom. We read The Little Red Hen, learning how she planted the seeds, harvested the wheat, milled the flour, and baked the bread all on her own because her friends wouldn’t help. The story gave us the perfect opportunity to talk about how firefighters are the opposite~they always say “yes” when help is needed.

To show our appreciation, we brought pizzas to the firefighters! As always, Mike and his team at Lamppost Pizza were amazing. The children loved creating their own personal pizzas and seeing the kitchen in action.

Engineer Cullen and his crew at Fire Station 34 were equally wonderful, giving us a fantastic tour. One of the highlights was watching the children practice calling for water and using the hose to knock over cones~it was a huge hit! A special joy for me was getting to see my son, newly hired Firefighter Hansen, helping lead the tour.

It was an extra treat to see some of our alumni students as well as future Discovery students. Watching familiar faces return and new ones join in added so much joy to the day!

It truly was a memorable day. Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who joined us and helped make this field trip such a success.

🎃 Pumpkins, Pumpkins, Pumpkins Galore! 🎃

What a wonderful October we had learning all about pumpkins! Our trip to Bishop’s Pumpkin Patch was a big hit with the train ride, hay ride, pig race, and this year’s exciting new addition — Farmer Bill’s tractor ride.

We wrapped up the month with some fantastic pumpkin-themed party days! Parents volunteered, donated supplies, and joined in on the fun. You can’t go wrong with painting, carving, and even hammering golf tees into pumpkins!

A big thank you to all our amazing families for helping us end October with a pumpkin bang!

🍎📚 “Ten Apples Up On Top!” came to life in our classroom this week! After reading this silly, stack-filled story, our preschoolers took on the challenge of balancing real apples! Just like the characters in the book!

Thanks to our recent Apple Hill field trip, we had plenty of fresh apples to try it out… and let’s just say, keeping even one apple on top is harder than it looks! 😂 Apples were wobbling, falling, and rolling across the room, but the giggles and excitement made it all worth it.

We love bringing books to life through play, and this activity was the perfect mix of storytelling, movement, and laughter. 🍏❤️📖

When you bring back a box of apples from Apple Hill… you have to make apple muffins!

Today, the children enjoyed a fun and tasty cooking/science lesson. Each child had a turn adding either a dry or wet ingredient to the bowl. We talked about measuring cups and spoons, explored the ingredients needed for muffins, and even sang a silly song about Ms. Mary as the Muffin Man!

We baked the muffins in a mini muffin maker, and soon the whole room was filled with the sweet smell of cinnamon and apples. Kids were running in from outside just to catch a whiff of the deliciousness!

It was a yummy, exciting day full of learning and laughter!

Despite the heat, we had a fantastic time on our very first Tiny Tots field trip to Apple Hill! 🍎 🍏 Rainbow Ridge Farm did not disappoint. From discovering gems and fossils, to a nature walk filled with buzzing bees, 🐝 a dizzying maze, and of course, enjoying delicious donuts 🍩 and cider — what a day!

Thank you to everyone who made the trip up the hill. We hope you enjoyed meeting other families and getting to know your child’s classmates. We’re already looking forward to more fun field trips ahead! ❤️

First Field Trip of the year!
Kinder Kids Apple Hill 🍎 🍏
Despite the rain, we had a wonderful time on our first field trip to Rainbow Ridge Farm in Apple Hill! Thank you to the families who were able to attend and help make the trip a great success.

The children had fun discovering beautiful gems and fossils, exploring the flower walk, watching the busy bees 🐝 at work, finding their way through the maze, and of course, enjoying the delicious donut🍩 and cider!

We really enjoyed meeting family members and hope you enjoyed getting to know one another. It was a fun and memorable day!

Tiny Tots’ First Week – A Big Milestone!
The Tiny Tots wrapped up their very first week at their new school ~ and what a big milestone it was for these sweet kiddos and their families! With new teachers, a brand new environment, and for many, the first time away from mom and dad, it was a week full of big feelings and brave hearts.
We are so proud of how well they’ve transitioned. The tears didn’t last long, and soon we were singing songs, dancing, painting, and exploring all the fun and exciting toys in our classroom!

The First Week is in the Books!
What a wonderful start to the new school year! Our Kindergarteners came ready to learn, play, and explore. We've spent the week getting to know one another and learning the routines that help our days run smoothly.
One of the most heartwarming moments has been seeing so many students using the conflict resolution skills they learned last year. From asking politely for a turn, to trading toys, to using timers ~ it's clear they're already putting these important tools into practice.
We’re incredibly proud of them and so excited for all the learning and growing ahead this year!

That’s a wrap on Week Four of Summer School!
Our summer session came to a roaring (and stomping!) end as our Stega-Stars and T-Rex Explorers chomped their way through an unforgettable dinosaur-themed week! From erupting volcanoes and digging into dino bones to crafting paper plate dinosaurs and rocking their handmade dino hats, making slime, bubbles, and celebrating a special birthday— the creativity and fun were endless.

A giant thank you to our incredible high school interns — Maya, Charlotte, and Xavier — for bringing your energy, kindness, and helping hands. You made this week a blast, and we loved having you with us!

Enjoy the rest of your summer, and we can’t wait to see everyone back in August for a brand new school year!

Week three of Summer Camp Was Out of This 🌎 Our Comet Catchers and Earth Explorers blasted into camp ready to learn all about space! We built cardboard spaceships, explored our solar system and its eight planets, crafted paper planets and straw rocket ships, pretended to fly through space- and so much more. Our adorable astronauts were all smiles as they soared through a week full of cosmic fun!

Up next: Dinosaurs 🦕
Tomorrow kicks off our final week of summer camp, and we’re going prehistoric! Get ready to stomp, roar and dig into a dinosaur-mite adventure!

Week Two of Summer Camp ✔️
We wrapped up our ocean theme—and what a commotion in the ocean we had! 🌊 The campers got hands-on making Hermit the Crab houses out of playdoh, painting and decorating sea shells, creating squishy oceans in a bag with blue hair gel, and even whipping up some sea foam using a hand be**er! We topped it off with a magical ocean in a bottle and so much more. The Silly Seahorses and Wiggly Whales had a wave of a time! 🐚🐳

Next up? 🚀 Week Three launches us into outer space as we welcome our astronauts for a stellar adventure. Buckle up—it’s going to be out of this world! 🌟👨‍🚀🛰️
