Yesterday, students at Proctor Elementary School and Proctor Jr./Sr. High School enjoyed a special opportunity to connect with two talented local authors, making for an engaging day centered on literacy and creativity.

At Proctor Elementary School, students in PreK through Grade 4 welcomed author and illustrator Jason Chin. Having read many of his books throughout the school year, students were excited to learn firsthand about the creative process behind his work. Chin shared how ideas become stories, guiding students through the steps of writing and illustrating a book. Following his presentation, students participated in a StoryWalk, exploring a trail filled with poems, stories, and artwork that brought literacy to life in an interactive and memorable way.

Later in the day, students in Grades 5 through 8 gathered at Proctor High School to hear from author Doug Wilhelm. Wilhelm spoke about the art of storytelling, including character development, connecting stories to real-life experiences, and the power of sharing meaningful narratives. Students were highly engaged throughout the presentation and had the opportunity to have their books signed afterward.

The day was filled with thoughtful conversations, insightful questions, and inspiring experiences that reinforced the importance of reading, writing, and storytelling. Thank you to Jason Chin and Doug Wilhelm for sharing their time, talents, and passion for literacy with our students!

The Destination Imagination team from West Rutland School carried the Vermont flag in the opening ceremonies parade in an arena of thousands of people in Kansas City. For their challenge, which won the Vermont overall state DaVinci Award for outstanding creativity, they created a game show and built three devices to operate and enhance the game. They also solved an instant challenge -- a timed spontaneous engineering task. They watched performances with and traded Vermont pins with teams from around the US, Turkey, China, Mexico, Ukraine etc. They took workshops on music, magic, science, improvisation and more. The students on the team were WRS eighth graders: Sarel Venter, Jordan Brink, Erin Washburn, and Lucas Venter. Destination Imagination is a creative, student-led, problem-solving, team-building science and performance competition.

This morning at Rutland Town School, Trooper Alibozek visited with eighth-grade students to demonstrate how math is applied in crash reconstruction investigations. Students explored concepts such as speed, distance, friction, and other factors that investigators analyze when examining vehicle accidents.

Through real-world examples and hands-on calculations, students learned how professionals use mathematical equations to determine details such as a vehicle’s speed prior to an accident and how scenes are reconstructed. The presentation provided an engaging look at how classroom learning connects to careers in law enforcement and public safety.

On May 22nd, students from both Poultney Elementary School and Poultney High School came together to celebrate Poultney Art Day!

The afternoon was filled with creativity and community spirit, featuring craft demonstrations, music, and a variety of engaging activities for students to enjoy. The event provided a wonderful opportunity for students of all ages to explore the arts and celebrate their creativity together.
