Jacob Tjaden '22 has received a prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship—considered one of the most competitive and sought-after honors for early-career STEM researchers in the United States—following his recent graduation from Colby College. Jacob was selected for his "unflagging work ethic" and his potential to make contributions to the field of software engineering, which he will continue to study at Columbia University.

Head of School Sam Schaffer announced today that Alessandro Ferzoco '14 will serve as Roxbury Latin's next Director of Development: "Throughout the search process, it became clear to all members of the search committee that Alessandro was the right individual to lead Roxbury Latin’s philanthropic and constituent engagement efforts, now and into the future."

For the past three years, Alessandro has served as RL’s Director of the Annual Fund, and under his leadership this past fiscal year, annual giving surpassed $5 million for the first time in the school’s history. The greatest strength Alessandro brings to this role, however, is his ability to build and sustain trusted relationships across the RL community. He possesses a deep institutional understanding of the school itself: its traditions, its culture, its language, and the people who have shaped it across generations.

In Alessandro's own words: "Roxbury Latin has endured for nearly four centuries because generations of alumni, parents, faculty, trustees, and friends understood that excellent institutions do not sustain themselves. They survive only when people choose to sacrifice for them, steward them carefully, and hand them forward stronger than they inherited them. I am so grateful to be taking on this important role for a school that I love.”

Thanks to your generosity, we have achieved another extraordinary year in fundraising for Roxbury Latin. Gifts to the Annual Fund surpassed $5 million for the first time in the school's history, and your robust participation allows us each year to realize RL's distinctive mission: to democratically assemble the most capable, bright, aspiring group of boys, regardless of their families’ means; and to bring together and support the most talented, dedicated faculty to know and love those boys. Faculty member emeritus Richard “Dick” Russell passed away on June 17 after a long battle with illness. Dick served as a teacher, coach, and advisor at Roxbury Latin for 33 years, from 1977 to 2010, and was a stalwart member of the Mathematics Department.

Dick’s contributions and commitment to his students extended far beyond the classroom. Dick coached both hockey and baseball and was an enthusiastic fan at RL athletic competitions. A walking anthology of RL history, Dick delighted his students with his animated storytelling. Upon his retirement in 2010, the senior class dedicated their yearbook to him as follows: “It is Mr. Russell’s devotion, hard work, and kind personality for which he is most loved. For his commitment, his tireless work ethic, his personality and hilarious stories, for his genuineness and kindness, we dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Russell.”

In his time at RL, Dick offered his unmatched enthusiasm, his unwavering care, and his force of personality. We extend our deepest sympathy to Dick’s family, and we are grateful for the commitment of this lifelong educator and the impact he has had on decades of Roxbury Latin students and, by extension, on all of us.

Thirteen boys, along with Madam Kostur and Monsieur Diop, recently returned from France after another magnifique summer immersion experience abroad. RL’s long-standing—and often transformative—cultural immersion programs include homestays with local families and academic work in students’ elected modern language. The experience also allows students to learn and enjoy much about local history and architecture, food and culture, industry and natural beauty. 🇫🇷

Seventeen students traveled to Greece this month to immerse themselves in the country's culture and history. The trip—chaperoned by Mrs. M-K, Mr. Beam, and Mr. Phillips—included a visit to the Temple of Poseidon, a walking tour of the Acropolis, a hike up Mt. Lycabettus, a tour of the National Archaeological Museum, and visits to all four locations of the Panhellenic Games, among many other highlights, delicious meals, and memorable experiences.

Kenneth Foster '26 has been recognized by two organizations, reflective of his generalist achievements in athletics, academics, overall character, and individual influence. He has been awarded the Positive Athlete Award for the New England region—an award that recognizes high school student-athletes who have overcome adversity, exhibited outstanding character, and given back to their communities. He also earned a gold medal from the Boston chapter of the NAACP Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological, and Scientific Olympics. With this win, Kenneth will go on to represent Boston at the NAACP National Convention this July. Congratulations to Kenneth on all of his achievements and his new role as an RL alumnus.

A compelling op-ed by Rahsaan Mustafa-Coentro (II) was recently published in the CommonWealth Beacon, addressing the importance of keeping siblings placed into foster care together. Rahsaan has been a foster brother twice; he's the founder of Kicking It Together, a soccer clinic for kids in foster care and their siblings, and he volunteers with Silver Lining Mentoring.
