We need to share some important information with you. The Mississippi Department of Education needed a company to oversee assessments of special needs students, so they hired a consultant to help them make a selection. This consultant then guided the MDE to select his previous employer after signing an affidavit stating that he has never worked for them. In addition, this out-of-state company's bid was $800,000 higher than a competing offer submitted by AEC in partnership with Morris & McDaniel.

The Clarion Ledger has begun coverage with more detail, which you can read here: http://www.clarionledger.com/story/news/2015/01/03/consultant-steers-mde-contract-former-employer/21238869/

Assessing Educational Competencies was at Pontotoc County School District last week holding a Common Core training session based on Owl Moon. Here is some of the great feedback we got . . .

What I learned:
1. I have learned how to include my English learning students in all subject areas. I now understand the importance of English learning students being with English speaking students.

2. I have enjoyed the games and information in a fun way my kids can enjoy in my classroom. These activities can be used in different subject areas with my students.

3. I have learned how to help my English learning students be better communicators and writers. I love the different activities that were shared with us.

4. This has helped me, and now I know how to help all of my students, not just my English Learning students. I enjoyed how we had to move around and communicate with other teachers outside our grade. I like to hear how other grades would use this information.

We also heard requests for training in: Integrated Writing, Writing for older grades, Behavior Management, Classroom Management, MSTAR and Common Core. The good news is that we have training sessions and professionals in these areas, and we would love to come back to lead more events like this.

We're listening to you, teachers and staff! Send us your feedback and questions anytime via FaceBook, [email protected], or call (662) 295-1195.

AEC has a motto ... This is why we believe in the team approach ...

"Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much". Helen Keller

So I (Dee) would like to share a story ...

Sitting with at teacher this week ... She shared with me a story about a young man who needed extra help with his studies-if he failed he would be thrown off the only game he knew and could do well ... baseball. He was going through difficult times ... both at school and at home (his mom and dad were divorcing). He came to her reluctantly – hiding because it meant he was recieveing SPED services. Despite all efforts ... he still got thrown off the team.

Turn the page ... he was still coming to get services so he could graduate. Then, one day ... unannounced, he brought a friend. He told his teacher, “If you don’t help him, he will get thrown off the team too.” The teacher could not legally serve this student - HE was not SPED ... but she could tutor him after school and SHE DID. He did not get thrown off the team.

Both boys went on to graduate with Diplomas ...

AEC wants to give a shout out and say thanks ... to all the teachers who go above and beyond the call of DUTY!

For all of you who are doing MAAECF, DLM, IEP’s, ESY’s and the other many tasks you do ... THANK YOU!
