Music at Monticello starts long before an instrument ever touches a student's hands.

In the lower grades, our students learn using the Kodály method, a European ear-training approach built around singing, listening, and keeping a steady beat. They begin with rhythm and their singing voice, then progress to singing in harmony. Eventually, they pick up their first instrument, the recorder, preparing them for orchestra, band, or choir in the upper elementary grades.

It's not just music class. It's ear training, discipline, and a foundation that carries all the way through middle school, where our performers consistently earn Excellent and Superior ratings at Utah music festivals.





La música en Monticello comienza mucho antes de que un estudiante toque un instrumento.

En los primeros grados, nuestros estudiantes aprenden con el método Kodály, un enfoque europeo de entrenamiento auditivo basado en el canto, la escucha, y mantener el ritmo. Comienzan con ritmo y su voz al cantar, luego avanzan a cantar en armonía. Many schools call themselves college prep. But here's a question: prep for what, exactly? 🤔

Many public schools take a skills-based approach, focused narrowly on reading and math tests, while leaving out the history, literature, science, and cultural knowledge that college coursework assumes students already have. 📚

That's the gap Monticello Academy closes. Our Core Knowledge curriculum builds a content-rich foundation starting in kindergarten—from studying ancient civilizations in 1st-3rd grade to Shakespeare in 5th grade—paired with Singapore Math's conceptual approach and real computer science, Python and C++ included. 💻

🏕️ What happens when seventh graders swap classrooms for campsites?

At Jordanelle Reservoir, Monticello students mapped the Provo River watershed, investigated streamside ecosystems through macroinvertebrate and water-quality sampling, explored the Nature Center, kept nature journals, and hiked the Three Rocks Trail. 🔬🥾

They also learned the basics of tent camping and outdoor cooking before ending the day with stargazing. ✨

Girls and boys attended separate overnight sessions, each designed to build confidence, responsibility, and community.
🌲 It is all part of Monticello Outside, our outdoor education program for the upper grades.

The 2026 Acadience Math results are in, and the Monticello Academy West Point families have a lot to be proud of.

Since 2022, our K-3 math scores have climbed every single year, from 22.7% to 77.1% at or above benchmark. That's not a one-year jump. It's five years of steady growth that took our students from below the state average to more than 12 points above it.

This comes at a time when a recent statewide report found Davis School District's math scores have declined more than most districts in Utah since the pandemic. Our results tell a different story.

It's another reason we're proud to be Utah's 2026 Charter School of the Year. Proud of our teachers, our students, and the work behind these numbers.

Ya están disponibles los resultados de matemáticas de Acadience 2026, y las familias de West Point tienen mucho de qué estar orgullosas.

Meet Shane Pearson, the new Campus Director at Monticello Academy West Point.

Shane brings a background as a junior high science teacher and elementary school counselor, and he's clear about what he's building this year: classrooms where it's safe to make mistakes, clear and consistent expectations, and protected instruction time so teachers can teach and students can fully engage.

That's not an accident. It's what happens when strong academics, real character education, and a calm, focused environment work together. That's the whole child approach that's always defined Monticello Academy, now under new leadership carrying it forward.

"What makes Core Knowledge different from how most kids learn?" Our answer: kids don't just learn a subject, they build connections across everything they're learning.

Take the Middle Ages. Students write about valor, learn a period dance in PE, create a rose window in Art, and sing a Gregorian chant in Music. Same era, five different subjects, one connected idea.

That's Core Knowledge in action. And it's why when you ask a Monticello student, "What did you learn at school today?" there's usually a meaningful answer.
