Dear MSL Alumni, If you have not received an invitation to next week's MSL Alumni event, it is because we do not have your contact information. Please be our guest at the Norton Sculpture Gardens next Thursday evening. Details and a sign-up are located within the invitation below:
Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter stated “A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don’t necessarily want to go, but ought to be.” So how do great leaders get people where "they ought to be?"
Weekly discussion topic…Mentoring and Coaching
Here in the U.S. we live and work in an individualist society. Having said that, if you really want to grow in your leadership ability, no one gets there alone, and mentors and coaches can make a huge difference in this professional development.
Of the mentors and coaches that you have worked with, what were the key skills and characteristics that made good mentors and coaches good for you?
Tonight marks the last night of the 2019 Spring A-term for on-ground classes. MSL Faculty and Staff are praying for your success, students!
Thanks to all who participated in our "trust" poll last week. More than 2/3 of respondents have a leader/supervisor in whom they can trust. That is a blessing!
For those who declared their leader cannot be trusted, in one word, what is the root cause of the distrust? 🧐
My favorite cartoon about leadership shows a leader speaking at a podium at the end of a plank that is out over a deep gorge (like the Grand Canyon) and the only thing keeping the leader from falling is the weight of the followers standing on the other end of the plank. This brings up a critical insight in leadership, while a leader may have authority and power of a position, the real power has always been with the followers, because no leader can lead without followers, which brings us to our discussion question for the week. It is…All of us are “consumers of leadership” in some form and in some venue. What are “musts” that you require of a leader before your consideration of them as a leader?
We are in an interesting place in our history as a society, as Americans, as members of organizations, and as members of religious organizations. In virtually every setting there is a need for leadership, but when we see or read of leaders that have come up short, there is consistently a problem of character involved. This one of the reasons I’m in the process of putting together a curriculum for young adults on character in leadership. Topics on my list about character in leadership include values and ethics; integrity; moral courage; earned trust; self-control; being accountable and responsible; being a role model and leading by example; feeling real empathy, compassion, and concern for others; fortitude, meaning staying steady in the face of difficult circumstances or pressures and bouncing back from setbacks; and finally, it is forged from difficult decisions and actions taken in crisis situations.
1) Is character still relevant and important in leadership? If so, why and in what way? If not, why not?
2) You’ve read the list of components of character in leadership. What would be included on your list and why?
MacArthur School of Leadership…weekly discussion topic…Destructive Leadership
Much of the leadership development that occurs for most of us, occurs during the normal course of many days in our jobs, and we learn from the leadership we experience and witness on the job. Hopefully that is positive, but unfortunately all too often it is not positive and we learn “what not to do” from destructive leaders.
Questions:
1) What are the behaviors, traits, and personality characteristics you have witnessed in destructive leaders?
What can lower level leaders in organizations with destructive leaders do to mitigate the harmful impact of destructive leadership on the employees in the organization and the functioning of the organization?
Dear All:
Welcome to the first engagement topic from the MacArthur School of Leadership. These will be posted weekly and we hope you join the discussion. Please “like” our page.
MacArthur School of Leadership…weekly discussion topic…Employee Engagement
According to Gallup (2013) disengaged employees cost U.S businesses between $450 billion to $550 billion each year in lost productivity. Currently, 30% of employees in the United States report that they were engaged at work, whereas 52% report being not engaged at work.
Questions:
1) Identify what you have found to be disengaging in workplaces you are familiar with?
2) What can leaders do to build a “culture of engagement?”
