From the classrooms to the hallways and all the little details in between, each area was created with a purpose, to help our students feel safe, comfortable, welcomed, loved, and excited to learn.

We know that the environment our students walk into each day matters. We want them to know that this is their school, their safe place, and their home away from home. A place where they can learn at their own pace, celebrate every accomplishment, build friendships, grow in confidence, and always know they belong. ❤️

We are so thankful for a team that goes above and beyond, putting their whole hearts into creating something truly special for our students and families.

Catatonia is a complex but potentially treatable neuropsychiatric syndrome that affects an estimated 10% of individuals with autism. It is characterized by marked changes in movement, behavior and awareness, and may slowed movement, unusual postures, and waxy flexibility. The symptoms can develop gradually and are often mistaken for other conditions or simply seen as a worsening of existing difficulties.

While published research suggests that 1 in 10 individuals with autism experience catatonia at some point, the true number is likely higher, meaning that opportunities for effective treatment may be missed.

For parents and carers, understanding the early warning signs can be life-changing. For clinicians and researchers, increasing awareness is essential to improving recognition, diagnosis and outcomes.

We are delighted to welcome Richard Jin, MD, PhD, as our Synchrony 2026 speaker on this important topic. A board-certified adult psychiatrist and a psychiatrist-scientist at the University of California, San Francisco, he specializes in caring for patients with concurrent neuropsychiatric symptoms and neuroinflammatory or autoimmune disorders.

He manages an outpatient consultation clinic for adults and children with these overlapping conditions. His primary research interest is in understanding how immune responses in the brain impact behavior.

Dr Jin is currently pursuing specialty training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at UCSF while studying the effects of early-life viral infection on brain development and behavior in the laboratory of Dr. Anna Molofsky. His research is supported by the A.P. Giannini Foundation and a UCSF Weill Clinician-Scientist Award.

Dr Jin's clinical and research work sits at the cutting edge of neuroimmunology and immunopsychiatry, exploring how interactions between the immune system and the brain may contribute to neuropsychiatric conditions, including catatonia.

His presentation will offer valuable insights for families seeking to better understand unexplained changes in their child, as well as for clinicians, researchers and other professionals who may encounter catatonia in their practice.

This is just one of the many thought-provoking sessions at this year's Synchrony Conference, which will bring together leading experts to share the latest research, clinical advances and practical knowledge to improve the lives of individuals with autism, their parents, caregivers and families.
