Happy ! Today, we’ll be doing another post. Welcome to the Wiechert Earthquake Station, home to the world’s oldest fully functional seismograph! Emil Weichert, who became the world’s first professor of geophysics in 1898, started to study earthquakes as a field of geophysics in 1902. He started building the Earthquake Station in Göttingen, Germany, and installed seismographs to help study the shaking earth. Those seismographs were so accurate, they set the standard for years to come. The most popular device for people visiting today though, was built in 1908 by one of Weichert’s students, Ludger Mintrop, a 46 foot tall tower that can drop a 4 ton steel ball. Mintrop built the tower to help him study earthquakes by allowing him to refine the adjustments on the seismographs, making them even more accurate. You can still see the ball drop today, they drop it on the first Sunday of every month, between 2 and 5 PM, weather permitting.

Happy ! Welcome to Woolsthorpe Manor, potentially one of the most famous locations in the history of science! The Manor was the birthplace of Sir Isaac Newton, on Christmas Day, 1642. It is also the location of the famous apple tree that Newton sat under to come up with the theory of gravity! Newton was working at Cambridge in 1665 when the Black Death swept through London between 1665 - 1667, and threatened the rest of the country. Because they didn’t want an outbreak, Cambridge gave all of its students and faculty time off until it was over. Because of that, Newton went home during that time, and worked on some of his most famous theories. One of those theories was the theory of gravity, but there is no evidence that an apple fell on his head. A friend of his did say that he saw an apple fall from the tree though as the point where he started to come up with gravity! You can still visit the tree yourself, because the 350 year old tree is still standing and producing apples! You can find the manor and tree in Lincolnshire, England, if you want to visit.

Happy ! Today, have a Democracy Sausage! In Australia, voting is mandatory, with a $20AUD fine. To help encourage people to get out to the polls, the tradition of serving Democracy Sausages got started. Sausage Sizzlers were a summer tradition along time before though, and transitioned into Democracy Sausages to help raise money for different charities on Election Day! Typically, you can find the sausages served doused in BBQ or tomato sauce in white bread. You can also find onions, though they might cost extra. During Australia’s 2016 elections, Democracy Sausages surged to its highest popularity so far. Twitter released a sausage emoji to accompany the hashtag, and was one of the most popular hashtags of the election. Democracy Sausage is also Australia’s 2016 Word Of The Year according to the Australian National Dictionary Centre. To find a true Democracy Sausage, head to any Australian polling place, or for a normal sausage, head to a Bunnings on a weekend!

Happy belated ! Today, welcome to the Horizontal Falls! Located in Talbot Bay, Western Australia, and nicknamed the “Horries”, the Horizontal Falls are a very impressive trick of the eye. While it looks like they are actual waterfalls, the Horries are actually pretty flat, and it’s due to water rushing through the narrow channels! As the tides change, it will change the directions of the “waterfalls”. If you want to explore the falls, you can do it in a boat, or hire someone to fly you over the falls.

Happy ! Today, welcome to Ōkunoshima! Also known as Usagi Shima, Rabbit Island in English, this island just south of Hiroshima is covered in rabbits running loose, even though it has had a dark history. Japan, even though it signed the the Geneva Convention to ban chemical weapons in 1925, started producing chemical weapons on Ōkunoshima in the lead up to WWII. The island was so important to the Japanese war effort, it was even left off of maps to try to keep it secret. After the war, the Allies disbanded the production facility and set all the rabbit test subjects free. Some people don’t think that’s how the rabbits got on the island though, instead going with the theory that the rabbits were brought there when it was converted into a park.
