Grief doesn’t leave. It just learns how to sit quietly beside you.
It shows up in the smallest moments — a smell, a song, an old photo, a random Tuesday. It lives in the body, in memory, in the spaces we don’t expect. And somehow, alongside it, joy still finds a way in. That’s the duality — carrying both. Always both.
This Friday, I underwent a hysterectomy and endometriosis surgery — one of the hardest decisions of my life. Grieving the loss of choice of carrying, the part of me that once held life — my little powerful Revolutionaries — and facing the truth that this disease had spread across my body aggressively. My body whispered: you’ve done enough… it’s time to let go, to choose your quality of life — emotionally, physically, spiritually.
And still, in the midst of that, there was grace.
A husband who refused to let me settle in pain. A path that led me to care that changed my life. Dr. Sandhu, who affirmed that what I was feeling was real — that it wasn’t in my head, but in my body. And Dr. Power, who stepped in with both precision and deep care — explaining every detail, holding space for my fears, and ultimately changing my life. I will forever be her number one fan. What they gave me was more than treatment — it was validation, clarity, and a way forward.
There is something about the sunrise — the quiet promise that even after the longest nights, light returns.
I remember my husband and I taking photos of the sunrise the mornings our babies were born. Holding new life, standing at the beginning of everything, not knowing all that would come but feeling the fullness of humanity.
And then, this Saturday morning — the morning after surgery — I took another. A different kind of beginning. Not the birth of a child, but the choosing of myself. The choosing of a life where I am not living in constant pain. A reminder that beginnings don’t only come with birth, they come with letting go.
And then… my Northwest babies emerged while my husband rolled me to the car. [continued in comments]
