Mobile phones have caused great disruption in the classroom for both young and adult learners.
Educators are still trying to find solutions to minimize cellphone exposure during instruction.
I just tell my students to take good pics of me to share with their single uncles. 😜

I overheard a student ask their peer "do you need a rubber", and admittedly, I was taken aback 🫢 by his blazoned audacity to ask such an inappropriate question.
💡I found his question inappropriate because in American English, "do you need a rubber" means "do you need a condom"
He pulled out an eraser and handed it to his classmate. 🤨
Pointing👉 at the eraser , I asked him "what do you call this". When he replied "rubber", I began to connect the pieces.
💡This is why it is crucial to go beyond learning/teaching vocabulary and grammar and really dive into the cultural aspects of English. American English terms and expressions hold different meanings from British English which hold different meanings in Aussie or Australian English. 💯

It doesn't matter if English is not ❌your first language or if it is the only language you know. Learning how to have difficult conversations personally & professionally is strong need that spans cultures and abilities. 💯
I wish this topic was commonly addressed in Business English textbooks and courses, but the sad truth is that the large majority of textbook publishers typically neglect the underlying needs of English language learners.
That's why College Preparatory and ESL Professional Tutoring Services exists. 😉 We ACTUALLY satisfy the linguistic, cultural, academic, and professional needs of our learners. We do this by selecting real-world situations and subject matter that are significant to today's English language learners.
💎Here is a snippet of the activities our English club participants
enjoyed:
✅Brainstorming personal and professional situations where
having conversations within these situations are difficult
✅ Matching colloquial expressions centered on how to have
difficult conversations professionally and personally
✅ Creating and practicing real-world scripts they can
implement instantaneously outside of the classroom (they
see the results and are eager to share in the next scheduled
session)

I don't know who needs to see this, but it's baby hair not baby hairs. 🫢🤯
💡Hair is not a countable noun. It is nearly impossible to count each strand of hair. In the event that the strands are counted, the hair still would not be counted. It would be the hair strands that would be counted. Therefore, adding an 's to hair is an erroneous move to make.
💡Hair is a measurable noun. This means that measuring units, such as inches, would be used to express hair length. Additionally, adjectives, words that describe or modify nouns, could be used to provide more details about hair (long, short, medium-length, voluminous, etc.).

Why are you negotiating parts of yourself to people who have no ownership of your life? 🤔🤔
My ELL's (English Language Learners) in one of the English Clubs I facilitate discussed this.
Here's how it started:
🌟 I played a snipplet of 's interview. It was a TikTok vid which is perfect for learners to expand their world by connecting with content creators and fellow onlookers who comment on the post. This supports their continuing practice/study outside the classroom. 💡https://www.tiktok.com//video/7338574091122707754?_r=1&_t=8lKWSa75bJe ⬅️⬅️⬅️This is the link to the TikTiok I mentioned.
🌟 I placed all participants in individual breakout rooms to complete the Who Are You? worksheet⬇️⬇️⬇️ after I explained the instructions and answered all questions. (5-7 minutes)
🌟Next, I placed participants in small group breakout rooms to discuss the video clip and to share their written responses. This particular population LOVES to converse, so I give them additional time (15-17 minutes) to exchange and share. Typically though, I assign 10-12 minutes for small group, speaking activities.
🌟Then, I transition to the next worksheet, I'm Not Gonna Negotiate!, by going over the instructions and answering my students' questions before giving them 7-10 minutes to complete the worksheet.
🌟Participants enter new, small group breakout rooms to discuss what they used to negotiate and will no longer continue to negotiate. This is where they practice the follow:
✨initiating conversation
✨interrupting to contribute to a point made before the topic
changes
✨asking for clarity or elaboration
Not only are learners in my English Club learning common English language skills, but they are also using English in real ways that improves their natural speaking ability and decreases the possibility of them sounding robotic. Oh yea, they also get to learn about prominent American figures such as Dr. Brene Brown, so there's the cultural aspect that gets explored too!
Give these activities a try, whether online or in-person, and share in the comments how they work for your learners! 😉
