Congratulations to GOA alumna Hayley Nagelberg ’15 on the publication of her new book, The Price of Belonging: The Beauty and Chaos of Becoming Israeli!

Beginning in the hallways of Schechter/Golda Och Academy, Hayley's journey continued through the University of Illinois and her decision to make aliyah and serve in the IDF as a lone soldier with Garin Tzabar. Along the way, she shares her experiences facing antisemitism on a U.S. college campus and how those experiences shaped her decision to serve.

The book offers an honest, inside look at IDF service, officers course, the day-to-day reality of military life, and what life in Israel has been like since October 7, 2023. Ultimately, The Price of Belonging is a story that will resonate with anyone who has grappled with questions of identity, purpose, and the cost of following their convictions.

Matthew and Jackie first met at NJY Camps, where their story began. Jackie also has a special GOA connection through her late grandmother, Terry Polaner z”l, who was a beloved kindergarten teacher at our Lower School for many years.
