💡 ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: West Orange High School Class of 2008 graduate Zachary Ehrlich was recently featured in the July/August issue of the Journal of Environmental Health as part of the National Environmental Health Association’s Member Spotlight series.

The feature traces Ehrlich’s journey from West Orange High School to earning his Doctor of Public Health from the Rutgers School of Public Health in 2025 and building a career dedicated to environmental health and public health.

Ehrlich hopes sharing his story will highlight the important work of environmental health professionals and inspire today’s students to pursue careers that make a meaningful difference in their communities.

For the first time in 15 years, WAVE is bringing home a Division Championship, completing a perfect 8-0 season along the way. This year’s team was the largest in program history, with 114 swimmers, all from West Orange, and 41 qualifying for the Meet of Champions, the most WAVE has sent in years. 🏆

The program is West Orange through and through. Led by Head Coach Lizzy Butler, the coaching staff includes current and former West Orange students, many of whom grew up swimming for WAVE themselves. Several are still competing for the team while also coaching and mentoring its youngest swimmers.

This championship season is especially meaningful as WAVE celebrates Coach Lizzy’s final season after six years leading the program. Her impact reaches well beyond wins and championships, helping build a program centered around confidence, sportsmanship, leadership and community.

Congratulations to all swimmers, coaches and WAVE families on an unforgettable summer. 🏊🏾 🙌🏾

This summer, Kaila Edwards proved that learning doesn't stop when school is out. The rising Mt. Pleasant Elementary fifth grader traveled to Japan, where she attended classes at Nishinomiya City Naruo Elementary School, immersed herself in Japanese language and culture, and even helped protect the future of our oceans.

While in Okinawa, Kaila took part in a coral conservation program, learning how reefs grow, why they're essential to marine ecosystems, and building her own coral seedling that will one day be planted in the ocean to help restore damaged reefs. Experiences like these have only strengthened her dream of becoming a marine biologist. 🌎 🇯🇵
