The new school year is right around the corner, and students in our Rockland BOCES Hudson Valley P-TECH are ready to make the most of it! Learners can stop by to pick up their personal Chromebooks for school, just in time to prepare for their first day of classes at Rockland Community College and the Tappan Zee Education Center.

Rockland BOCES Hudson Valley Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) is a four- to six-year program (grades 9-14) focused on engaging students in hands-on, project-based learning to succeed in careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Students who successfully complete the program earn a high school diploma and an associate’s degree at no cost from Rockland Community College. Graduates are first in line for a job with industry partners in the growing STEM career fields. Learn more at RocklandBOCES.org.

Rockland BOCES’ Literacy Zone, Rockland Works, the NYS Department of Labor and the Workforce Development Board of Rockland County host the Rockland Civil Service Mini Job Fair in Nyack! Over a dozen state and county employers gather to meet with potential employees looking to become public servants. A wide variety of job openings were available, including business systems analysts, auditors, engineers, dispatchers, police officers and more!

The Literacy Zone helps adult residents of Spring Valley improve their personal and professional lives by connecting them with essential community resources. Rockland Works is Rockland’s one-stop employment and training resource, supporting employment and training needs of job seekers and the staffing needs of local employers. Our school stores are bustling with people and laughter even during the summer! At our Rockland BOCES District-Based Secondary program at River View High School, learners in Melissa Diaz’s class manage the school store, providing refreshments to students and staff throughout the week. Running the school store engages students with their peers, provides experience with real money and focuses on various soft skills needed to manage a storefront.

Our extended school year program is an intensive, six-week program available to students who require an extended school year (12 months). Students in our Rockland BOCES Kaplan Community Development Center (KCDC) spent the summer baking up fun! During the extended summer program, learners followed a weekly theme that included a sweet treat to enjoy. During All About the Author week, students made honey cookies to pay homage to Winnie the Pooh! Starting with the basic ingredients, learners created their cookies from scratch, mixing together ingredients like honey, browned butter, sugar and everything else needed!

KCDC is a community-based vocational program designed to prepare students, ages 16-22, for the transition from school to adult life. The program provides students the opportunity to work on a variety of vocational, social and communication skills to help them gain confidence and independence. Our extended school year program is an intensive, six-week program available to students who require an extended school year (12 months). Everyone’s seen the new building blooming on our West Nyack Campus, but you haven’t seen what else is getting updated behind the scenes! Our facilities team has been hard at work all summer preparing our campuses for an amazing school year. Check out some of the work being done!

Human Resources received a new A-frame roof over its entrance (photos 1-3) to keep visitors dry and out of the sun while waiting for assistance.

Our transportation department (photos 4-7) receives special treatment with a new set of fuel pumps, a concrete pad and new brick veneer to start the school year.

Lastly, our business office is receiving a new ramp and staircase (photos 8-9), ensuring the building is accessible to all visitors and employees.

These projects only scratch the surface of the work being done to prepare our agency for the upcoming school year. Other projects include applying a fresh coat of paint in our classrooms, repaving our parking lots and updating fixtures to ensure learners and staff are comfortable and safe.

Hands-on learning happens all summer long at our Rockland BOCES District-Based Secondary program at River View High School! Learners explore the PAES (Practical Assessment Exploration System), a curriculum that brings work-based learning into the classroom. Learners check in with their “supervisor” to get their task, grab their box and follow the instructions. Each box contains a task for students to complete that aligns with a skill needed across various industries. This provides students with the skills they need to succeed!

Earlier this summer, Lohud photojournalist Peter Carr stopped in and captured our Rockland BOCES Teen Tech Camp in action!

Thank you, Peter, for showcasing our Salon 102, Junior Veterinarian, Fire Science and Welding/Manufacturing camps. Located at the Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC) in West Nyack, Teen Tech Camp offers students entering grades 7-10 hands-on experiences, a taste of various career pathways and a lot of fun! Whether your teen wants to try their hand at welding, digital design or animal science, these one-week sessions have something for everyone!

Supported by Music For Life Creative Arts Therapy PLLC, the band performed an engaging set of pop favorites that had the whole school grooving!
