We are pleased to announce that Mrs. Leigh Ann Wood is joining the SMCS faculty and will teach second grade next year. Mrs. Wood has over 30 years of classroom experience in elementary grades in both West Memphis and Marion schools.

April 16, 1986 Time Capsule update:
Several items survived: See individual photos for more information.

Kindergarten (Mrs. Littlejohn): Class photo on old merry-go-round, and sheet of paper with hand-written names of each student.

1st Grade (Mrs. Boatman): Smiley face stamp, and piece of paper that disintegrated.

2nd Grade (Mrs. Vega): Audio cassette tape with 2nd grade singing songs. Sending this off to see if the audio can be saved.

3rd Grade (Mrs. Weinreich): Either an audio cassette, or an April 16, 1986 Commercial Appeal.

4th Grade (Mrs. Wilbanks): Video cassette with 4th graders being interviewed, kickball game, and footage from interior and exterior of school. Sending this off to see if the video can be saved.

5th Grade (Sr. Christopher): Same as 3rd grade.

6th Grade (Mrs. Lynn): 1986 Coca-Cola can.

7th Grade (Mrs. Martz): Polaroid photos of the 7th grade class, Mrs. Loesch (principal), Mrs. Franchere (secretary), Mrs. Martz, Mrs. Vega and Sr. Miriam, 50th anniversary lobby bulletin board, exterior of church, and a poor student in the "dark room." IYKYK.

8th Grade (Sr. Georgia): Diocese of Little Rock diploma (mostly disintegrated) and cover. Likely a special order with something unique printed.

More photos and information will be forthcoming, but the SMCS reunion was a huge success with nearly 150 people attending!

Exactly 40 years and two days after it was buried, the 1986 time capsule was unearthed. While water had seeped into the box years ago, several items survived. Stay tuned for photos and details. We will give this teaser with what each grade placed in the time capsule in 1986:

Kindergarten: Very little remaining
1st-3rd: Not sure which items belong to which grade
4th: Partial survival - we will see what can be salvaged
5th: Unsure which item
6th: Survived
7th: Survived
8th: Partial remains

The sun is shining on SMCS, but the side roads, especially those around the school, are still too hazardous. SMCS will be closed on Monday, February 2.
