Back at The Civic Center, The Marion Club House or The Armory....

A long overdue post from The Loved Ones! The Loved Ones was the very best cover band I was lucky enough to be a part of during the music on the move years of the sixties. Fouling from your left to right we were Ronnie Mason on Bass, me(!) Don Christian lead singer, Drummer Gary GT Taylor, Guitarist Jim Butler and Ronnie Whitten also on guitar. During the High School years of ‘64 thru ‘67 were player at every opportunity.
I’ve spoken at length that my three favorite bands from this period were The Beatles, naturally, The Zombies also from across the waves and, finally America’s own The Byrds. The Byrds were founded by folk artist Roger McGuinn who built the group based on soaring harmonies, an electric twelve string guitar and folk music. Their first album was titled Mr. Tamborine Man a true anthem for the decade. We learned and played during the summer of ‘65 that entire album. The Byrds closed that album with an ironic song from World War ll entitled We’ll Meet Again. The haunting melody told of lovers seperated perhaps forever by war. Twenty years later with Vietnam becoming far too real for too many teens it was a natural for us to ”close” each show with this bitter sweet wish. Ronnie Whittier provided the jingling 12 string work and Jim Butler did the “picking” on guitar with very heavy vibrato. Both men provided harmony to my lead vocal.
Now over 55 years later the irony is not lost on me. I hope you enjoy from The Byrds and that long ago summer of ‘65 - “We’ll Meet Again”.
