Happy 2024 swim families ~ Save the date for open registration for spring/summer swim lessons: 3/1/2024

Mama Lu’s Swim School has been giving back to the community each year from fun runs, auctions, fundraisers and more. This year 2023, we even started a program called “Swim For All” where we offer free lessons for families in need. We believe every child deserves the opportunity to learn this life skill of being a safe swimmer.

In 25 years of teaching swim, I had no idea I would have a swim school one day. This vision started during the pandemic of 2020 when pools were being shut down and me Coach Lu started teaching lessons in the lake of Lake Oswego at my friend’s boat ramp. Desperate times😂 After much deliberation and the original city of West Linn’s approval, we invested in our own backyard pool. Word got out in 2021 Coach Lu has a pool and my program quickly outgrew my backyard. Unfortunately, swim lessons were upsetting a handful of neighbors and they handled their frustration poorly. They went straight to the police and the police went to the city and I had to stop swim lessons. They didn’t even give me the chance to correct or fix the issue. After a year of talk, the city’s final decision was I could offer swim lessons in my backyard ONLY if my pool was enclosed “indoor pool”. My response🧐🤨🤔🙄 I wished I had known that in the beginning…

Well friends this could have crushed and ended me but it was the overwhelming support the community and friends that stood by me and told me not to give up because our community, our state of Oregon needs swim lessons. This is an important life skill many overlook but learning how to swim could and will save your life. I leaned into my faith in God, through 🙏 and asking for guidance, God opened doors to allow us to continue swim lessons, now with a total of 4 pools in West Linn and Lake Oswego. This spring/summer of 2023, we averaged 100 students per day. I hired highly qualified stay at home moms as an office manager and book keeper. We had instructors, lifeguards and mentored them in life skills of having a job, paying taxes, and how to have good communication skills. The success of Lu’s Academy For Life~Swim School was not because of Coach Lu…it was our amazing team of coaches, lifeguards and most importantly the behind the scenes hard working moms and my dear friends JOY and VANESSA. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you do!

What can we learn from Coach Lu’s battle for swim lessons? Have faith, love others even those who are hard to love, do good and good will come back around, and never give up!
