Hello! So, my friend/mentor Patty Morrissey is teaching a free 1 hour Zoom workshop on the KonMari method/decluttering, tomorrow Fri 1/14, at 9am PST. Highly recommend! She is a Master level (1500+ client hours) KonMari consultant, and Marie Kondo hires her to teach her certification courses. It’s a casual workshop so just come “as you are”. I’ll be there! I feel like little ones say the most amazing things when they are remembering being in utero, being born, or being a newborn. This morning when we were snuggling before getting up for the day, my 3 year old said, “Before I was born, I lived in a very tiny world. And it was real! And I made it bigger. With my powers! But I don’t have my powers any more.”

Did your kids ever talk about that time period in their lives?

When children are involved in the organizing process, it “sticks” better for them and they are more invested. Love this adorable example!

Inside the homes of maximalists and minimalists 02/16/2020

I loved this little video from BBC about a minimalist KonMari consultant and a maximalist Interior designer- it made me chuckle. It goes to show you, Joy isn’t about a number of possessions, it’s about your relationship with your possessions and how you feel in your environment. You can create an environment that suits you best as a minimalist, as a maximalist, or anywhere in between!

Inside the homes of maximalists and minimalists While some enjoy clean, uncluttered spaces, others prefer filling their home to the brim with furniture and décor. Is there a middle road for living authentically?

An Interview With Certified KonMari Consultant Kadra Pixton 02/02/2020

So the wonderful West Linn Public Library interviewed me before they hosted me for a KonMari workshop the other night! I loved doing the workshop, there were about 50 people there, they had great questions. The West Linn Library puts on great events, their Harry Potter Day that some of my daughters attended was PHENOMENAL. They even rented a Knight Bus and partnered with the local Starbucks to sell Butterbeer! Anyway here’s the KonMari video🤗

So exactly one year ago I started MY personal KonMari process with a Certified consultant by my side to help guide the process. It's fun to look back at the notes that I wrote about my experience at the end of that day.

KONMARI DAY 1 (INTRO + CLOTHING:)

Well. Today was amazing! I am so excited and energized and hopeful about our home. So I have to give a little background first. I read Marie Kondo’s book about 2 years ago and it really resonated with me. I tried to see if our current (at the time) professional organizer would help us implement the method in our home but she wasn’t really the Konmari type, I tried to find a new professional organizer that could help us using the Konmari method, and no luck. But. We have finally found a Konmari certified consultant and we started today. Wow! I love how spiritual and psychological the approach is. Also, Ana is a great therapist. She is neutral, she is encouraging, she asked questions that help Bryce and I to find the answers on our own. We are actually learning a lot about ourselves and about each other in this process, and we are actually happy, like, together, which is a huge surprise to me. “Stuff“ has been one of the hardest things in our 10 year marriage. Ana is really good about letting you make your own decisions about your things, when you are ready. She holds no judgment, there is no shame, she is just there to support and help.

So first we gathered every single item of our clothing (just mine & Bryce’s to start). My pile took up about half of a small couch. His pile took up most of a 9 piece sectional. But, neither of those is right or wrong in this, we are just different people who function differently. The cool thing about starting with clothes, is clothes are something that you literally use every day, and they are the only thing that are really truly JUST yours if you share a living space with other people. So, Bryce and I are feeling happy and energized and unified today, but I’m wondering how things are going to go when we start on “shared items”. Ana said you don’t have to verbally thank each item that you choose to discard, but do acknowledge, think about, what has each item taught you? Maybe it taught you that yellow isn’t the best color on you. Acknowledge that, feel grateful for the gift of that knowledge, and let it move on to bless someone else’s life!
I was surprised that my pile of clothing was very small. It was a bit of a sad realization to me, because I think the reason it is small is that I have felt overwhelmed by all of the things in our life and so I subconsciously kept at least the things that I had complete control over, to a bare minimum. Like a “shrinking”, if you will. I don’t like that! A therapist once told me of a relationship that I was in, “Don’t you be less to make him more.”

So the process is most effective when completed in 6 months or less. We are doing ours in one week (!) Ana says this is actually really good because honestly, in the process, your home will get worse before it gets better. You “tidy” by category, not by room, so EVERY article of clothing gets pulled out from all around the house and gets put in one pile, EVERY book, every PIECE of paper, etc., and so, your house gets a little up-ended and a bit hard to live in and function in. She was talking about the benefit of doing it in one fell swoop rather than starting, and stopping, and starting, and stopping, etc. Keep a momentum going, you know? Bryce & I have “decluttered” our schedules for the week. We have cancelled at LEAST 12 of our “regular commitments” for the week."

I learned this the hard way last year...

I LOVE ME A GOOD CHICKEN!

One thing that sparks joy for me is simple mealtimes. We know we’re going to eat everyday, so if we can have a good structure around that it makes everything easier. We’re well-nourished and we can do the work we need to, we don’t get HANGRY, etc. Time & energy put into meal planning is a great investment.

I love me a good rotisserie chicken! Costco has them for 5 bucks (we are a family of 7 and are frequent Costco shoppers!) and the meat from one chicken can provide 3+ meals for us. Good value sparks joy for me too! I’ll pick up a rotisserie chicken when I’m out grocery shopping anyway, and come dinnertime throw some rice in the rice cooker, quickly steam some broccoli in a pot, reheat the rotisserie chicken if needed and voila! dinner’s ready, with a protein, starch, and vegetable to boot. I once took a 6 week cooking course at our local naturopathic college, National University of Natural Medicine, and they taught us that our bodies best absorb the nutrients from our food when our meal is 1/2 veggies or leafy greens, 1/4 starch, and 1/4 protein. I like to take the extra meat off of the chicken by hand, right after we’re done with the meal, while the chicken’s still warm and the meat comes off easily, and all that yummy rotisserie goodness kindof gets slathered on the meat to make it extra flavorful. I tear it into bite-size shreds, like the size I would want in pasta or enchiladas, etc. and store it in one of our Pyrex glass “tupperware” that I love.

I’ll post some of my favorite simple recipes using that chicken meat later!
