The Child Nutrition, Maintenance, and Custodial staff participated with a group of students at West Ridge Middle School to decrease the amount of cafeteria trash sent to the landfill.

The students - Arohi Majmudar, Radhika Gautam, Ruhi Rachakonda, Charles Sun and Nishant Reddy - made a presentation to Principal Steven Ramsey, Executive Director of Facility Operations Jeremy Trimble, and Director of Child Nutrition Steve Stracke, to discuss the possibility of introducing compostable products in the cafeteria. These items would take the place of non-recyclable products, such as trays, cups and flatware.

This past week, the groups conducted a pilot program using compostable or re-usable service items, only. By all accounts, the pilot has been a success, showing the students and staff that it could be done. The final part of the pilot will be to collect all the data, to determine the impact - both in the reduction in landfill waste and the costs incurred by the compostable products used.

The students were great to work with! They came ready with good ideas, and positive attitudes!
