Purdue University Aphasia Group

Purdue University Aphasia Group The Purdue Aphasia Group is a "whole package" team comprised of researchers, students, local SLPs, persons with aphasia, and their loved ones.

We are dedicated to providing research opportunities and resources through the Aphasia Recovery Lab. Located in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Science at Purdue University, the Aphasia Research Lab is directed by Jiyeon Lee, PhD, CCC-SLP. The Aphasia Research Lab studies the effects of aphasia on the brain and how this relates to speech and language production and processing. Young adults, older adults, and persons with aphasia may participate in our studies. Our research aims to understand and improve communication outcomes for people with aphasia. The Purdue University Aphasia Group includes the Aphasia Research Lab and the clinicians at the M.D. Steer Speech and Language Clinic who work with individuals with aphasia. We try to promote understanding of aphasia, and provide resources for individuals with aphasia and their caregivers in the community.

Small changes can make a big difference:
• Give extra time to respond
• Avoid finishing sentences
• Reduce background noise when possible
• Be patient and present

Aphasia Awareness Month reminds us that communication is shared work. When we adjust how we listen, we make space for more voices.
