In a few weeks, Indiana will be a rural sea of green. But right now, if you travel over a 100 hundred miles north to south, especially into and out of the Michiana region, you’ll see a dramatic shift from unplanted to planted to established and off to the races. Two weeks ago, while the southern third of the state was side-dressing and doing their post applications, the northernmost tier of the state was actively planting. Each year, the drastic difference depends largely on the weather (including temperatures). Here’s to the hope for bursting bins at harvest. Be sure to follow along to join us in this annual journey of Indiana corn and soybean production.

"Cover crops aren't just good for the soil - they're good for the bottom line." That's how Jim Douglas, Farmers for Soil Health farmer advisor and USB farmer-leader from Flat Rock, Indiana, describes what the program means for his operation. With updated payment rates of $35 per acre and a simplified one-year contract, there's never been a better time to get started. Enrollment is open now through Aug. 31.
