Sarah Kossler, junior Nutrition and Dietetics major in , had the opportunity to participate in an awesome hands-on learning experience! Here’s what she has to say about competing in the Institute of Food Technology Student Association’s Product Development Competition:
“Last school year, I was the team captain for a group of food science students that competed in the Institute of Food Technology Student Association (IFTSA) Product Development Competition "Smart Snacks for Kids". This competition challenges university students to develop an innovative and nutritional food product for kids. My team consisted of four other students, and we created a product called Ocean Hero Bites. Ocean Hero Bites is a reimagined bite sized yogurt snack that consists of a seed crust, whole fruit, and tofu/coconut yogurt center. Our goal was to create a product that was shelf-stable, appealing to kids, and would educate kids about the importance of conserving ocean life.
We were selected as a finalist team (top 6) in the international competition and invited to present and compete with our product at the IFT Conference held July 2022. While we did not win the competition, we received an honorable mention and had a great learning experience.”
We’re so proud to have Sarah as part of our HHS Community! 👩🏻🔬🍎

This week’s is from Michael DeHaven from Valparaiso, Indiana! Michael is a senior studying Nursing along with a minor in Psychological Sciences.
Michael’s advice to incoming and prospective students is to be an ambitious go-getter that is never afraid to ask questions. He believes these types of people make successful students. Don’t be afraid to try new things as it is important to develop and learn a wide range of skills. This versatility is what it takes to be a great student in HHS.
Michael chose Purdue as it felt like a second home to him ever since his first step on campus. He chose Purdue Nursing because he loves meeting people and learning about the human body. Purdue utilizes a holistic approach to teaching nursing by treating the whole person and not just their injury. They also integrate teaching care of a person's emotional state in addition to their wounds and illnesses.
Michael's favorite Purdue tradition is the Fountain Run. His involvement on campus consists of the Diversity in Nursing Association and the Purdue Student Security Patrol. Michael's dream job is to work for the Indian Health Service as a Registered Nurse, caring for Native Americans while learning about their culture.
