College of Pharmacy second-year professional students Kai Fraehsdorf and Simon Tackett, along with Alex Forman of Kean University, took first place in the Orbit category of Purdue Innovates Incubator’s fall 2026 Moonshot Pitch Challenge with Allergen Maps.

Food allergens aren’t required to be listed on drug products, making it difficult for patients with food allergies to know which medications are safe for them. Allergen Maps addresses that challenge by identifying hidden allergens in medications and providing safer alternatives. The team is also continuing to market its AllergenMeds app.

More than 50 teams submitted ideas to this semester’s challenge, with 15 finalists pitching their solutions in two minutes to a panel of judges. The competition recognizes bold ideas across three categories — Earth, Orbit and Moonshot — with first-place teams receiving $1,500.

For Allergen Maps, the award will help support marketing, maintain its servers and move the team toward its next step: expanding its scope to pharmacies beyond Indiana. Tackett said the competition also helped the team sharpen its presentation skills and build confidence pitching to potential investors.

A New Chapter for Purdue Pharmacy

Purdue Pharmacy is entering an exciting new chapter as two respected leaders take on new roles at Purdue.

Effective Oct. 1, Eric Barker will become Purdue’s senior vice president for health affairs. In this broader role, Barker will have executive ownership of Purdue’s strategic One Health initiative and continue to provide executive oversight for the colleges of Pharmacy, Health and Human Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine in coordination with their deans.

Barker has served as the Jeannie and Jim Chaney Dean of Pharmacy since 2017. Among his priorities in his new role will be advancing Purdue’s health and life sciences presence in Indianapolis, coordinating One Health faculty hiring and strengthening connections across Purdue and with external partners.

Preeti Sivasankar has been appointed interim dean of the College of Pharmacy, succeeding Barker. Currently Purdue’s vice president for research innovation and head of the Strategic Interdisciplinary Research division, Sivasankar is a respected academic and researcher with deep expertise in health care and interdisciplinary research.

As interim dean, Sivasankar will oversee the college’s teaching, research and engagement missions while working collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, alumni and other stakeholders to advance Purdue Pharmacy.

A national search for the next dean of pharmacy will begin in the coming weeks.

We’re grateful for Barker’s leadership of Purdue Pharmacy and excited to welcome Sivasankar as the college enters this next chapter.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Dr. Charles “Chip” Rutledge.

Dr. Rutledge served as dean of the Schools of Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Sciences from 1987 to 2001. During his time at Purdue, and throughout his career, he was a dedicated leader, mentor and champion of the university and the pharmacy profession.

Following his tenure as dean, Dr. Rutledge became the first executive director of Purdue Discovery Park and later served as Purdue’s vice president for research. He also served our profession with distinction on the national stage as president of both the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy and the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics.

For many in the Purdue Pharmacy community, Dr. Rutledge will be remembered not only for his leadership, but for the people he mentored, encouraged and supported throughout his career. His commitment to Purdue and to our college left a lasting mark on generations of students, faculty, alumni and colleagues.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Dr. Rutledge's family and all who knew and loved him.
