Happy Monday!
This week we wanted to highlight the importance of understanding that there is no connection between stuttering and intellectual ability.
Stuttering is a speech disorder, not a cognitive impairment. It is a neurological condition that affects the flow or fluency of speech, not a personโs ability to think or learn.
Have a great week! โ๏ธ๐

Yesterday Purdue NSSLHA held an event that featured an awesome guest speaker, Andy Fitzenrider!
Andy is a person who stutters, and at this event, he was able to share his experience with stuttering and some key tips about changing the mindset around stuttering and what has helped him in his journey.
We wanted to share some key takeaways from his amazing talk:
1. In therapy, donโt focus SO much on fluency and trying to stop stuttering, but instead focus on how to MODIFY the stutter. Stuttering therapy is about getting rid of the struggle, not the stutter.
2. The reactions of others are what triggers the fear and avoidance of stuttering, not the actual stutter.
3. Stuttering can vary from person to person and it is important to try not to compare someoneโs stuttering journey with your own.
4. Stuttering is just one small part of what makes a person human, it does not define who a person is, and in fact it is what makes us all imperfectly perfect!
