One of the most common myths about aphasia is that it affects intelligence.
In reality, people with aphasia know what they want to say—but the words may be hard to access or express. Thoughts, ideas, humor, and personality are still there.
Speech language pathologists focus on helping people communicate those ideas in ways that work for them—through therapy strategies, visuals, and supportive conversation partners.
Understanding this difference changes how we listen.
