Thirty animals treated. More than 300 dogs examined. Veterinary students learning alongside clinicians. And plenty of time spent supporting Indiana agriculture.

The 2026 Indiana State Fair gave Purdue Veterinary Medicine students, faculty and staff opportunities to contribute across the fairgrounds.

Fourth-year veterinary students, guided by Dr. Bethany Funnell and Dr. Laura May, provided veterinary care for livestock and poultry while gaining hands-on experience in food animal medicine. Over the course of the fair, the team treated 30 animals.

During the 4-H State Fair Dog Show, Purdue veterinary students and clinicians examined 302 dogs in about three hours, checking for contagious disease and other health concerns before competition.

Purdue Veterinary Medicine also participated in agricultural events throughout the fair, volunteered at the Indiana Farmers’ Dairy Bar and Hoosier Ribeye Stand, helped staff the historic veterinary clinic in Pioneer Village, and connected with livestock exhibitors and agricultural leaders.

Hospital service update: Temporary diversions have been lifted.

As of 10 a.m. EDT today, September 19, the temporary diversions for the Purdue University Small Animal Hospital and Purdue University Equine Hospital have ended.

Both hospitals are accepting new admissions again.

Thank you to our clients, referring veterinarians and community for your patience while the necessary repairs were completed.

5K is better with a little company. 🐾

The 2026 Dr. Skip Jackson Dog Jog 5K Fun Run/Walk is Saturday, September 26, and you can join us with or without a canine companion.

This student-run Purdue Veterinary Medicine tradition welcomes students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the community for a morning route through Purdue’s campus.

📍 Lynn Hall, 625 Harrison Street, West Lafayette
🕖 Check-in begins at 7 a.m.
🏃 Run/walk begins at 8 a.m.

Dogs joining the event must remain on leash and be up to date on vaccinations.

A new Purdue-edited volume brings together laboratory methods designed to support research on tauopathies, a group of neurodegenerative diseases that includes Alzheimer’s disease and chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

Jessica Fortin, DVM, PhD, assistant professor in Purdue Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Basic Medical Sciences, edited “Translational Research Methods for Tauopathies,” published September 4 by Humana Press as part of the Neuromethods series.

The 300-page volume provides protocols for in vitro and in vivo research methods focused on tau, a protein whose misfolding and aggregation are associated with several neurodegenerative diseases. The methods were selected to support laboratories studying tau biology and related approaches to neurodegenerative drug discovery.

Purdue contributors to the volume include Fortin, Taiwo Ademoye, Natalie Horgan, Omnia Ibrahium, Raluca Ostafe and Jean-Christophe Rochet.

Farm managers and rural appraisers from Indiana and Illinois recently visited the Reed Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, the facility that houses the Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at Purdue University.

Dr. Kenitra Hendrix and Dr. Craig Bowen led the group on a tour of the laboratory, giving visitors a firsthand look at the facility and its diagnostic spaces.

Have you ever seen a horse wearing a fly mask, sheet and boots?

That gear helps protect horses from flies, which can be more than a nuisance. Flies can contribute to skin and eye irritation, stress, excessive stomping and, in some cases, disease spread among horses.

Common fly protection includes:

🐎 Fly masks to help protect the eyes and face
🐎 Fly sheets to create a barrier against biting flies
🐎 Fly boots to protect the legs and reduce stomping

Along with fly control, remember the summer basics: plenty of fresh water, shade and good ventilation.

Contact your veterinarian if your horse develops eye irritation, skin sores, swelling or other concerning signs.

The 2026 Purdue Veterinary Conference is almost here, and registration is still open.

From September 23 through 26, veterinarians, veterinary technicians, faculty, staff and students will gather on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus for continuing education, professional connections and events across the Purdue Veterinary Medicine community.

This year’s conference, “One Health: Modern Veterinary Medicine, Today and Tomorrow,” includes:

• Up to 23 continuing education credit hours
• Keynote presentations on wellness, the human-animal bond, professional development and the future of veterinary medicine
• Dedicated Exhibit Hall hours and networking opportunities
• A celebration of 50 years of the Purdue University Veterinary Technology Program
