Lauren Ema, clinical assistant professor in the Purdue School of Nursing, busts this myth for us. She says, "Influenza vaccines administered by intramuscular injection cannot cause influenza because they contain either inactivated (noninfectious) influenza viruses or specific influenza antigens rather than the live, disease-causing virus. Because the influenza strains circulating in the population change from year to year, the vaccine composition is updated annually to include the strains predicted to be most prevalent during the upcoming influenza season."

Our alumni spotlight features James L. Young II, MPH.

James graduated from the Department of Public Health in 2023 from our MPH Online Program. He is currently the Clinical Research Retention Coordinator in the Emergency Medicine Division of Research at Wayne State University School of Medicine.

James says the PUBH program prepared him for his current role and future endeavors by providing the foundational knowledge and competencies essential to his current role. When asked, James responded, โ€œPurdue's rigorous academic training, combined with its focus on applying public health principles to real-world challenges, equipped me with the theoretical frameworks, analytical skills, and equity-centered perspective necessary to bridge academic research with community impact and exceed enrollment and retention goals in complex, multi-site clinical trials.โ€

If James had to give advice to current PUBH students to help them achieve their goals and future aspirations in the field of Public Health, he emphasized the importance of viewing all courses as opportunities, seeking out practical experiences, and building relationships with faculty, peers, and community.

Get vaccinated and stay healthy! Registration is now open for no-cost vaccine clinics, happening Sept. 16 and Oct. 20, at the France A. Cรณrdova Recreational Sports Center. Vaccines including flu, meningitis B, hepatitis A/B, MMR-II, Tdap/tetanus, COVID-19 and more will be available. The clinic is open to Purdue University students, staff, faculty and their family members (ages 11 and up) as well as to the community.

Kayce Solari Williams always wanted to be a resident assistant (RA) when she was an undergraduate at Texas A&M University but graduating early prevented her from pursuing that dream. Now a clinical associate professor in Purdue University Public Health, Solari Williams is living out a version of her dream of providing support for residential life as the university's Amelia Earhart Faculty in Residence.
