The Department of Anthropology offers a broad spectrum of specialties including archaeology and bioarchaeology, biological anthropology and the study of primates, anthropological linguistics, and cultural anthropology. We also focus on social and policy applications of anthropological knowledge, particularly in areas of diversity and globalization, medical anthropology, environment and conservatio
n, and international development. Our students participate in a curriculum designed to provide the professional skills necessary for research in academic and applied anthropology settings. We offer personalized mentoring, camaraderie, and a great sense of community among the faculty and graduate students. We feature a dynamic group of faculty, specializing in areas such as the anthropology of the environment and conservation; identity, religion; semiotics; gender and sexuality; popular culture; kinship; economic anthropology; African American Studies; archaeometallurgy; the archaeology of complex societies, ancient mining communities and landscapes of power; archaeolmetry; bioarchaelogy; human health and aging; reproductive ecology; nutrition; human evolution; conservation; primates; hominin diet and ecology; and cultural and applied anthropology in several regions of the world. We have faculty working in Mexico, Peru, Brazil, the Nile Valley, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Uganda, Chad, China, Armenia, Scandinavia, Alaska and the urban U.S. Opportunities for multi-year fellowships and graduate assistantships are available for qualified graduate applicants, including support for continuing students, conference travel, and dissertation writing.
