Purdue is home to 5 cultural centers and we're happy to call them family! collectively works hard to create engagement programs and events and our partnerships benefit more students. This spring semester, we collaborated with the to co-host a Hula Workshop and Spring Lu'au and we welcomed Purdue alumna Kanoelehua Perriera (MA'17) as our featured performer. We're grateful to have amazing alumni return to Purdue and especially thankful for Kanoe who shared her stories and lessons on Hawaiian traditions.

During Stress Free Zone week, we welcome some four legged friends to the Center for our "Therapy Dog Day" and they provide some TLC to our students. These programs are always popular and we're happy to help students relieve some stress as they prepare for finals.

In March 2026, the received the "2026 Outstanding Indigenous Support Program Award" from the national organization, Indigenous Peoples Knowledge Community (IPKC) with NASPA. We were honored with this "victory" which demonstrates how our NAECC "heroes," a/k/a staff--Felica, Tiffany, Alyssa, Yash, and Joniah, are making a positive impact on campus.

As the flourishes on campus...so does our ! We enjoy sharing traditional stories of our plant relatives and we welcome student volunteers to help us maintain our garden. This is another educational opportunity for us to share Indigenous knowledge on traditional gardening techniques, conservation and sustainability initiatives, and how to protect Mother Earth.

Throughout the year, celebrates Indigenous People with engagement programs and events featuring Native American elders, scholars, artists, and performers. Michelle Reed was our 2026 Artist-in-Residence and she shared her creativity and knowledge by hosting interactive workshop and a pow wow fitness class and creating a jingle dress to honor Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives.

The NAECC's first "victory" was opening our doors on March 2007 and our student resource center was located in South Campus Courts. We credit Purdue students, faculty, and staff who created the "Tecumseh Project" initiative and today, we continue to grow and flourish.

Congrats to Makena!!
We are excited to share the news...Makena Thompson of Naknek Native Village successfully defended her thesis earlier this month. Thompson’s M.S. research focused on Experimental Validation and Dynamic Modeling of a Heat Pump for Industrial Drying with Water Vapor-Selective Membranes. She is a Purdue SIGP scholar in the Mechanical Engineering Department from the College of Engineering. She will be moving to Salt Lake City, Utah to work as a thermal systems digital twin engineer at PassiveLogic.
