The Department of Food Science at Purdue University is committed to impacting the world food system and quality of life by educating and training undergraduate and graduate students for careers in industry, government, and academia. Our mission is to expand and transfer knowledge for continuous improvement of the safety, quality, value, and security of the world’s food supply through basic research and outreach programs. Our faculty, staff, and students are located on Purdue University’s main campus in the Philip E. Nelson Hall of Food Science, 745 Agriculture Mall Drive, West Lafayette, Indiana 47907. This building provides excellent research laboratories, as well as specialized facilities such as the sensory evaluation laboratory, pilot scale-manufacturing plant, student product development and innovation laboratory, and enology library for us to engage with the food and beverage industry and government partners.

Over the past couple of weeks, General Mills, Pepsico, and Hershey have hosted info sessions where our students have the opportunity to connect with industry representatives and learn more about internships and careers at these companies. We’re excited to share an important program update: our Fermentation Science major is becoming Industrial Microbiology & Biotechnology (IMB)!

The new name better reflects the breadth of what our students learn, bringing together microbiology, chemistry, biotechnology, & bioprocessing with a strong emphasis on hands-on, applied learning.

While the name is changing, the program's commitment to preparing students for careers in fermentation, food and beverage, biotechnology, bioprocessing, and related industries remains stronger than ever.

For future students: Those applying for Fall 2027 may still "Fermentation Science" as they explore Purdue’s sites. Fermentation Science and Industrial Microbiology & Biotechnology are the same program. The name is simply transitioning to IMB.
