Purdue at FARM 2026 🎶💻

Purdue creativity was on display at FARM 2026, the International Workshop on Functional Art, Music, Modelling and Design, held as part of ICFP 2026 in Indianapolis.

Professor Monte Taylor represented the Purdue Department of Music, and MFA Sound Design student Sujin Kim represented Purdue’s Department of Theatre and Dance, sharing original compositions and performances that bring together music, sound, technology and creative coding.

The Department of Music’s Tae Hong Park also played a key role behind the scenes, serving as FARM 2026 Performance Chair and collaborating with Princeton University Computer Science Professor Mae Milano, FARM’s General Chair, to organize and produce the event.

FARM brings together musicians, artists, designers and researchers to explore the creative possibilities that emerge when music, technology and computing intersect.

Purdue Department of Music Clinical Assistant Professor Monte Taylor’s composition FLAMETHROWER for string trio and live electronics received its premiere at Bled Contemporary Music Week in Bled, Slovenia.

The work was performed on June 22, 2026, at Bled Festival Hall as part of the international contemporary music festival.

We are excited to welcome Dr. Stacey DiPaolo as a new Lecturer in the Purdue University Department of Music this fall!

An accomplished clarinetist and educator, Dr. DiPaolo holds graduate degrees from SUNY Stony Brook and the Eastman School of Music. Her extensive career includes principal clarinet positions with several orchestras and performances at Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Opera, on Broadway, and at festivals, universities, and conferences across the country.

Dr. DiPaolo also brings more than a decade of university teaching experience, most recently serving as Professor of Clarinet at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. At Purdue, she will teach courses in music theory and history while helping expand our studio instruction in woodwind instruments.

Please join us in giving Dr. DiPaolo a warm welcome to Purdue Music. We’re excited to have her join our students, faculty, and community!

Therese Malinowski found a way to combine two passions into one career.

After earning bachelor's degrees in Aeronautical Engineering and Music Technology from Purdue, she completed a master's degree in Engineering Technology. While studying cello performance and composition, she discovered a passion for building string instruments, bringing together her interests in engineering and music.

As an undergraduate, Therese built an acoustic guitar. During graduate school, she built two violins and a cello, while her research explored the connection between structural optimization and musical acoustics.

Today, Therese works as a mechanical engineer and continues to build instruments and compose music in her free time. Her journey shows how creativity, innovation, and interdisciplinary learning can open the door to unique opportunities.

Last week, Dr. Cayari was invited to speak at Northwestern University in a panel at the Society for Music Perception and Cognition addressing the question, "Who gets to participate in music and how does that impact music science?" He was joined by international scholars and music educators to bring the work he does at Purdue Music to the forefront of global conversations on accessibility, culture, and inclusion in modern music-making! 🎶✨

Congratulations to Purdue University Department of Music faculty member Kristen Yeon-Ji Yun, who recently performed piano trio repertoire with faculty colleagues from the University of Ulsan during two concerts in South Korea.

The trio performed at the University of Ulsan on June 23 and at the Pohang Museum of Steel Art on June 25, sharing an engaging program of chamber music with audiences in both venues.

We are proud to celebrate Professor Yun's continued artistic collaborations and international engagement. 🎹🎻🎻

We’re proud to celebrate (Chris Cayari, Associate Professor) and (Renee Anderson, Lecturer) for representing Purdue Dept of Music at the conference, the premier gathering of voice teachers and performers from across the country.

During the conference, Dr. Cayari presented and performed his CREATE grant project, Pictures at a Gender[] Exhibition*, which recently received the 2026 Outstanding Audio/Visual Project Award from the International Association of Autoethnography and Narrative Inquiry.

Congratulations to both faculty members for sharing their artistry, scholarship, and creativity on a national stage! 👏🎤🎼
