Q: The Nov. 3 referedum ballot states taxes on an average priced home will increase by nearly a thousand dollars and at least one social media post cites a tax increase of $1,000+ – is that true?

A: No, your taxes may decrease, stay the same, or increase by a few dollars each year compared to your 2026 actual school taxes paid.

The ballot language says your taxes will increase by $956/year -- this is not the case. This language is required by the state to indicate the total amount of school tax from the referendum, including the amount approved by voters in 2010 and renewed in 2017 and 2023. Mandated ballot language is based on the premise that any particular school district does not already have in place an operating referendum fund. But because West Lafayette schools already have a voter-approved referendum, and depending on the value of your home and your qualifications for tax relief, your taxes may decrease, stay the same, or increase by a few dollars each year compared to your 2026 actual school taxes paid.
