What if your dog's jacket could help detect illness?

Purdue researchers led by Prof. Chi Hwan Lee and Prof. Rachel K. Surowiec (Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering) and Prof. Luis Dos Santos (Veterinary Clinical Sciences) developed a smart garment that continuously monitors canine respiration, body temperature, and activity using wearable sensors and AI-powered analytics.

The technology classifies respiratory patterns with more than 94% accuracy and could support earlier detection of health issues while reducing unnecessary veterinary visits.

🚶 Walking the Data

In BME 314 at Purdue’s Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, students aren’t just learning about biomechanics—they’re experiencing it.

Using OpenCap, an AI-powered markerless motion capture system, students walk across the classroom while cameras reconstruct their movement in 3D. They then analyze their own gait data to understand how engineers measure and study human motion.

The active learning activity introduces students to tools used in biomechanics research while connecting classroom concepts to real-world engineering applications.

“It feels weird,” said student Areli Rosas. “But I cannot wait to see the results.”

From biomechanics to computer vision, Purdue BME students are learning how engineers turn movement into data.
