America has a long legacy of revisionist history, whereby the respectable achievements of America’s leaders and Founders are highlighted, while their numerous atrocities are repeatedly eliminated or minimized from the history books in order to put them in the best possible light. Structural racism plays a large role in determining the conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age, and affects people’s access to quality housing, education, food, transportation, political power, and other social determinants of health. Understanding and addressing systemic racism from this public health perspective is crucial to eliminating racial and ethnic inequities, and to improving opportunity and well-being across communities. Our Human Relations Commission investigates complaints of discrimination in the City of Lafayette and encourages respect and understanding of all individuals and groups. Questions?
