Hi, I’m Jacob, a sophomore music student at Purdue! Here's my experience:
Purdue’s music department isn’t your typical conservatory music school. It is built to coincide with other majors, and with four concentrations to choose from, you get exactly what you want out of it. I’ve learned many valuable skills from my classes that I am grateful to have as part of my skill set and feel have made me a better musician, such as advanced music theory, how to play the piano, and, with my concentration in Music: Technology, how to use a digital audio workstation. When I’m not working on music, I’m focusing on my other major, Electrical Engineering Technology.
Naturally, I am also a part of Purdue Bands. Being in the Tower of Power Jazz Band here has introduced me to many great people and incredibly talented musicians that I am proud to call my friends and bandmates. Being part of Purdue Bands comes with once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, too! For example, this past semester, my jazz band performed at Notre Dame and got a chance to see Grammy award winner Christian McBride with his band Ursa Major. It made for one of the most incredible live performances I’ve ever seen!

At Discovery Forum (MUS 101) you never know what you’ll learn about. This week Koto presented a history of the shamisen, a guide to some of its styles, and then played a demo for us to hear! Next up was Jackson, who shared a class project of his. His project involved making his own digital instrument for someone to use, which he did his using a mic’d up soup can!
