On this 244th anniversary of Purple Heart Day. 💜🏅🇺🇸

Desmond received a Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf clusters, signifying he received three Purple Hearts. His first Purple Heart for a gash caused by a ricocheting rock and when he injured his leg badly the day before he rescued the men from the Maeda Escarpment, aka Hacksaw Ridge. The officers wanted to recommend him for two Purple Hearts. Desmond said one was sufficient to cover both actions.

On May 21, Desmond was wounded by an enemy gr***de that landed in a foxhole. Rather than call another medic to risk his own life, Demond treated his own wounds and gave himself a shot of morphine when the pain was too great. He waited five hours alone until morning.

As the litter-bearers began to carry him out, they passed a more critically wounded soldier. He asked them to put him down, rolled off the litter and insisted they take the other man.

While waiting for their return, Desmond and another wounded soldier set out together. Desmond was struck in his wrist by a sniper’s bullet. He used a rifle as a splint for his useless arm, and the two continued to crawl to safety. Learn more at DesmondDossFoundation.org

While training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina, Desmond took the long bus ride over July 4th to Richmond to surprise Dorothy. When he arrived, he learned she had gone to South Carolina to surprise him. After learning this, Dorothy caught the next train back & they had two days together.

At DANAFF IV, Bill Mechanic will deliver a Producer Masterclass and meet audiences following a special screening of Hacksaw Ridge at Le Do Cinema at 10:00 am on July 1.

The festival will present him with the Achievement in Cinema Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the art and global film industry."
