Some conversations feel especially important right now — and this is one of them. 💛

We’re honored to welcome Shayna Abraham, founder of Prepare To Bloom and Beyond the NICU, for an honest and deeply compassionate Teach Play Learn Featured Expert conversation:

Supporting Families Through the Hard Stuff: Teen Mental Health, Motherhood, and Finding the Right Care

May 28th at 11:30a PST/2:30p EST

For nearly two decades, Shayna has supported families navigating some of life’s most tender and overwhelming seasons — from adolescent mental health crises and therapeutic placements to the emotional realities of parenting through uncertainty, caregiving, and healing.

As both a professional and a mother who experienced a 112-day NICU journey herself, Shayna brings a rare combination of expertise, honesty, and grounded compassion to this conversation.

Together, we’ll explore:
✨ Teen mental health and what families are facing right now
✨ What higher levels of care and therapeutic placements actually look like
✨ How to support children while also caring for yourself as a parent
✨ The emotional weight families carry during crisis and transition seasons
✨ Why families need guidance, connection, and community, not shame

This conversation is for parents, caregivers, educators, and anyone supporting young people through hard seasons.
Because sometimes the most powerful thing we can offer families is not perfection or quick answers, but steadiness, support, and the reminder that they do not have to navigate this alone.

Three big takeaways from our conversation with educator and AI Integration Specialist Adam McGrath on navigating AI in education:

1. Have Conversations: Students, parents, and educators all bring valuable perspectives and unique strengths to the table. Kids are often navigating these tools faster than adults, which is why staying engaged, asking questions, and learning alongside them is so important.

2. Approach AI with curiosity: The technology landscape is changing quickly. Instead of leading with fear, we can lead with curiosity. Curiosity about the tools themselves, how children are interacting with them, and how educators are thoughtfully incorporating them into learning environments.

3. Understand the fundamentals: At its core, AI is a predictive mathematical process. It analyzes information, runs complex calculations, and predicts the next word, image, pixel, or response based on patterns in the data it has been trained on. Understanding this foundation helps us engage with AI more critically and intentionally.

Thank you, Adam, for helping us unpack such an important and evolving topic.

AI is rapidly becoming part of our children's educational journey and professional futures.

So how do we guide our children to use it well?

In this session, Adam McGrath breaks it down in a digestible way:
→ What AI is and isn’t in simple, practical terms
→ How it’s showing up in schools today
→ How to help your child think, not just get answers

Free play is where some of the most important learning happens.
In a world full of schedules, structure, and pressure to “do more,” unstructured, child-led play can feel… uncomfortable. Like maybe we should be stepping in, guiding more, or making it more “productive.”
But here’s a shift reflect on:
Play is the work.
When children engage in free play, they’re building problem-solving skills, creativity, independence, communication, and resilience.
You don’t have to lead it!
Create the space.
Offer open-ended materials.
Step back.
Let them explore, imagine, and even get a little bored. That’s often where the magic starts.
Free play builds on itself. The more space children have for it, the more meaningful it becomes.
If you’ve been wondering whether you’re “doing enough,” this is your reminder: you are.
Save this for later + share with a parent who needs to hear it 🤍

When we start to see behavior as communication, everything changes.

Instead of asking, “How do I make this stop?”
We begin asking, “What is this child trying to tell me?”

Because the truth is, behavior isn’t something we can force away.
It’s a signal.

A signal that a child might need support, connection, or a skill they haven’t developed yet.

When we understand that dysregulation is a nervous system state (not a character flaw, not manipulation), we show up differently.
We respond with curiosity instead of control.

And that shift?
It creates space for children to feel safe, stay connected, and build the regulation skills they need over time. 🤍

You don’t have to figure this out alone.

✨ Stay tuned for our next monthly expert event where we explore a variety of topics just like this and give you real, practical tools to support your child on their education journey.

Life isn’t meant to be perfect, it’s meant to be experienced 💛
In this conversation, Dr. Jen Douglas shares narrating life without judgment with her child. She models curiosity over criticism. Awareness over shame.
This simple shift is powerful. 🌿
When we narrate experiences without attaching judgment, we teach our children how to process emotions, build self-awareness, and extend compassion to themselves and to others.
