🧲 Montessori Materials Spotlight: Magnetic Forces & Gravity
This classic elementary work invites children to explore the invisible forces that quietly shape our universe. Through hands-on experiments, children discover that attraction and gravity are always at work (even though we can’t see them!).
🌍 What It Is
Children begin by feeling magnetic force through cloth-covered magnets, noticing how objects pull toward one another across space or sometimes push away. This concrete experience naturally leads to an exploration of gravity: feeling weight in the hand, watching objects fall, and observing how liquids and solids organize themselves according to their weight. Children experience force with their bodies and senses, building a deep foundation for truly understanding scientific concepts.
🏡 Try It at Home
🧲 Explore with magnets from the refrigerator door, noticing which objects are attracted and which are not.
📎 Tie a paperclip to a string and watch it “jump” toward a magnet.
⚖️ Drop two safe objects of different weights and observe what happens.
🥣 Mix oil and water in a clear container and watch how they settle.
Invite your child to describe what they notice without rushing to explain. Let their curiosity lead the way!
💬 Montessori Insight
When children discover that magnets pull, heavy objects sink, and gravity never lets go, they begin to trust that the universe follows laws and that those laws can be understood through careful observation.

Materials Highlight: Walking on the Line with Objects
To help young children develop balance, coordination, concentration, and body awareness, we offer a series of activities we call Walking on the Line. One of the challenges we provide is inviting children to carry objects as they walk.
We think about how to provide increasing levels of challenge with the objects we offer. Some options include: a basket, a flag, a small tower of blocks, a sphere on a spoon, a glass of water (or maybe two!), a bell, an object on a string, a bean bag on the head, an object on the head plus something in both hands. It’s fun to try this for yourself to see what feels simpler and what feels more complex.
🏡 At-Home Ideas
🦶 Use a line of tape, a rug edge, or sidewalk chalk for walking heel-to-toe.
🥄 Invite your child to carry everyday objects, such as a small bowl, a spoon, or a folded cloth.
🧦 Try balancing a soft object (like a rolled sock) on the head.
🍶 Pour water into a small cup and walk slowly together, modeling calm, careful movement.
Keep the tone playful and pressure-free, and be sure to stop before frustration sets in!
This is a fun way to help children develop coordination, focus, and joyful control of their bodies. Let us know what you discover!
