To Lee College Undergraduate Criminal Justice, Fire Science /Fire Protection Engineering, Forensic Science, Legal Studies, National Security, and Paralegal Students:
I am pleased to announce that the University of New Haven’s Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences is ready to take applications for the Cooperative Work/Education Program (Co-op) for the Fall of 2015.
The Co-op Program is designed to alternate periods of academic study with a period of work experience in a student’s field of study. Co-op students will gain practical on-the-job experience, and develop confidence, responsibility and maturity through the workplace experience. This experience will be invaluable for the students who are chosen for the program and will also provide them with professional contacts that may be helpful to them upon graduation from the university.
The students will be required to work 35 to 40 hours per week and earn an hourly wage set previously by the University and the Co-op Sponsor. It has typically been between $13 and $15 per hour. This will help participating students offset the costs of their college education.
The students that will be participating in this program will not be registered for regular, full time classes at UNH during the semester long Co-op program. They will, however, continue to be recognized as “full time students” by UNH and will be able to utilize campus services such as, housing, meal plans, and financial aid. Every student interested in the Co-op program should speak directly with the Financial Aid office about his/her particular financial situation because they would be earning money if chosen for a Co-op placement.
The current Co-op Sponsors are the City of New Haven, the Alexion Corporation, and Connecticut Junior Republic. The Co-op program allows students to work in various departments including fire, police, emergency medical services and communications, global security area in pharmaceutical business, and juvenile treatment services. The Fall 2015 Co-op will include new sponsors – the City of West Haven, North American Family Institute (NAFI), and Community Solutions Inc. (CSI). The City of West Haven will assign students to police and fire department, while NAFI and SCI, private non-profit organizations, will assign students to adult and juvenile offenders’ services.
The projected start-date for this new program will be the Fall 2015 Semester. In order for this to occur, the Henry C. Lee College is hosting information sessions to explain more about the process and answer any questions the students may have. The time and location for these sessions are:
March 30, 2015 (Monday) at 3:00pm, in South Campus Hall, Room 007 (Advising Center)
March 31, 2015 (Tuesday) at 4.30pm, in South Campus Hall, Room 109
The deadline for submission of an application is April 2nd, 2015. The application should be submitted to the Advising Center, South Campus Hall, Room 007 in a sealed envelope.
Students will be selected for the Co-op program around the middle of April 2015.
