I am not saying this is easy, but I am saying it’s important.

When I was a classroom teacher, I was sooooooo proud of my leveled library. Now, when I think about it, I cringe.

HOWEVER.

This is a know-better, do-better kinda situation. And we all know better, so I am here to help you do better.

The best feedback I hear is when my students say, “We’re done? Already?”

Most people think engagement for dyslexic learners means gimmicks or games that don’t actually teach anything. But really, it’s about structure, choice, knowing, and respecting your students.

The research on the Deaf and dyslexia is sparse, but two things are clear:

1️⃣ Struggling with print doesn’t automatically mean struggling with sign languages.

2️⃣ Dyslexia and language impairment can exist in Deaf signers.

Specifically, difficulty connecting written forms to sounds of spoken language.

Signers recognize meaningful parts of signs quickly, the same way hearing readers process meaningful parts of words.

Linguistic structure, to be precise.

Studies show these signers have typical intelligence and typical visual-motor skills, but have difficulty with grammar, sentence structure, and fingerspelling.

They call it “Developmental Language Disorder,” (DLD) or “Specific Language Impairment, in a Signed Language.”

And from what I can gather, the opposite is true, as well.

Lieberman, Borovsky, Hatrak & Mayberry (2015). Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition.

Parents ask me the same question. “How do I keep my child’s reading and spelling skills strong over the summer without turning our vacation into school?”

So I made this reading bingo board.

It’s low pressure and high engagement. Perfect for struggling readers, dyslexic readers, or any kid who needs reading to feel fun instead of stressful this summer.

No worksheets. Just simple, playful ways to keep language and literacy skills active while they’re at the beach, in the car, or curled up with an audiobook.

Sure, some people think this level of detail is nit-picky. But my people, OUR people, know better. 😏

This is about refinement and deepening our knowledge of language structure, so we can be responsive to the students in front of us.

And because language is cool. Sorry (not really), but it is.

The more I learn about language and its connection to reading and spelling, the more I want to share what I learn with school leaders, teachers, interventionists, students, parents, and kids.

Sure, some people think this level of detail is nit-picky. But my people, OUR people, know better.

This is about refinement. It’s about deepening our knowledge of language structure, together, so we can be responsive to the students in front of us. And because language is cool. Sorry (not really), but it is.

This is differentiation. This is Structured Literacy. THIS is science of reading.

I’m so happy you’re here.
